Went on a road trip 3 weeks ago. 600 miles from the house when suddenly, all the dash lights popped on. On a car, that usually means the alternator died and when the battery gets below 11 volts, the car is going to poot a black puff of smoke and the engine will die. On a bike, that means the stator or voltage regulator took a crap. Replaced the stator last year (Hades is an 08 that I’ve owned since 2014),so I was betting the voltage regulator died. Was 25 miles from the nearest Harley. Got there and had the system tested. Voltage regulator as I thought. Of course, they don’t have one in stock.

Suddenly, I see the trap. They have a service department with no parts. That’s like having a toilet with no water.2 service writers and a salesman try to convince me to buy a new motorcycle. They want me to buy a new motorcycle. All because the voltage regulator gave up the ghost? You people have lost your dadgum minds. Time to go.

Bike won’t start, battery finally died. There’s a Harley dealer 70 miles away with my voltage regulator. I ask the parts guy there if he could put hands on it and verify. It’s verified. I walk across the street to autozone and buy a battery. That battery got me within 10 miles of the destination when all the dash lights came on. Made it in, got the voltage regulator replaced in 20 minutes. Made for a wonderful 600 mile ride back to the house.

    Ingenuity wins every time.

Had my battery go out on a ride last summer. I would pop it into 2nd and run alongside it and dump the clutch to get it started. My buddy and I swapped out the battery in a parking lot of an autoparts store. Just glad I never stalled out in downtown traffic lol.
