I've been with this company only a month, truck has been broken down for all three weeks I've been here, two separate times. I opted to go home for the 4th of July since the truck would be in the shop until the following week. They didn't argue but said I would not receive breakdown pay and would have to pay for my rental car home. I'm regional and am supposed to be home on the weekends, kind of thought that was scummy but I accepted it. I didn't want to retrieve a recovery truck as a loaner before it was cleaned, you don't know how dirty it will be or if the person before you was sick with something.
The weekend passed and on Monday they said truck was still in shop wait until today. I called this morning and they first claimed that the truck was going to be broken down another week and tried to have me recover a truck in a state next door to my own. I thought that was weird, called my dispatch who has been very professional and nice (as has everybody I've spoken with over the phone), he said that it was supposed to be fixed and contacted my terminal, he called me back and said that my truck was indeed fixed. So I feel like they just needed somebody to go get that truck and didn't care that my truck was already fixed.
Here's the thing, they said they were not going to pay for my rental to recover the truck. Or specifically, they would put a bus ticket equivalent on my EFS card. That hit me the wrong way but I remained professional. Then I asked about my truck and they confirmed it was fixed, interesting right? They said the same thing, they wouldn't pay for a rental, only a bus ticket equivalent. So tomorrow I'm going to quit the company, it's something I don't want to do but I just have a bad feeling about this company. For the record it's a mega carrier but I'm not going to say the name.
My question is, should I get the truck anyway, is there such a thing as abandoning a semi truck like abandoning a load? It has been at the dealership where I left it since last week, I also confirmed that somebody came and picked up the load that I had. Can I get some veteran advice? Thank you.
Company wants me to rent A car to retrieve truck from dealership

Talk to @bryan21384 about Climate Express. Might take you if you haven't been a job hopper.

I've been talking to Fremont Contract Carrier, they're just waiting for my background. Climate Express is also an option, I will probably hear back from them tomorrow.
EDIT: I have 4 years experience with clean record.austinmike, Speedy356, Lonesome and 1 other person Thank this. -
Me personally, I'd get the truck and take it to the yard.Wargames, hotrod1653, Opus and 7 others Thank this.

Me personally, I would go get the truck. If you want to vault yourself to the top of a dispatch board, this is a great way to do it. It isn't like you're not going to get paid to recover the truck. I've certainly recovered my share of trucks. Honestly, I don't like it either but my moral compass says you do what's asked of you by the people who are paying you. I'm not telling you what to do, but if it were me, I'd be a pro, hop on that Greyhound and go get that truck. I promise you....companies will remember you for those types of favors. It's just the next state over so you probably won't be in the truck long. A couple of months ago, I rode out to Denver with a driver to recover a truck. Picked it up, hooked to a trailer, got a load, and came back to the yard the next day. Was the truck clean? Nope. Didn't care. They paid me to do it.Wargames, austinmike, TripleSix and 2 others Thank this.

Yeah, this is a toughie, but I'm going to have to side with the carrier. I know we think these carriers are rich as hell, but in reality, they are running on a shoestring, and just can't foot the bill for your convenience, and going home is considered a convenience, to them. What I would have done, if that truck wasn't ready in THREE DAYS, I'd tell them to cram it. You'd be surprised how that expedites things. The real story, is the shop is probably overwhelmed until New Years, and nobody to work on it.
Bean Jr. Thanks this. -
I'd walk. You're already home (with your stuff I hope) so doing anything for them moving forward is just going to inconvenience you. They've already proven to not respect you why let them continue to do it? Make sure you pull your DAC in a couple months to see if you need to dispute anything retaliatory on it.

What?
You’re regional, supposed to be at home on weekends, and the company tells you to go get the truck by giving you a bus ticket?
seriously find another company
the least they can do is a rental, they own the junk you drive and should treat this as their problem, not yours. -
Company is starting to jerk you around, find something else.
