Turned down - Is this a common problem for 'newbies'?

    I put in an application a couple of days ago with Stevens Transport out of Dallas, Texas. When you submit it, you get the 'We'll contact you in 24-48 hours. If you don't hear from us by then, call (Insert number here)" - Well, no call in the time frame, so I called them a few hours ago only to be told that "Other applicants have been chosen instead of you. You can re-apply in six months" - That's bad enough, but the woman I spoke to on the phone was incredibly rude, and had no intention of telling me -why- I wasn't chosen, even though I got the impression that she did, in fact, know.

    As I think is pretty natural when one gets that kind of response, I was fairly annoyed at first.. Then, I started thinking about it, as well as reading up (More so than before, even) on peoples experience with Stevens, and now... Well, I'm glad they cast me aside, honestly, and am disappointed in myself for not doing far, far, far more research. At least I learned a lesson on that front, and comparatively, not really the hard way.

    Really, the main reason they were my 'first' choice, in my area at least, was the need to 'get my foot in the door', as well as the money factor, since they have a 'meal assistance' program... But after the things I've read since I spoke to that woman, I think I'd much rather suffer with my gas station job for awhile longer, to save up enough to afford my own food during school, if I can't find one that provides meals (Even if it's one or two a day) during schooling, before I'm on the road with a mentor. - Maybe I'll get lucky, and get some money as a birthday gift on the 31st. That would be a definite help, even though it's not something I'm fully depending on - Just hoping for, I suppose.

    I still don't understand the 'logic' though, if there is any. My driving record is clean, I have no criminal history, no failed drug tests, nothing that should disqualify me for any reason, and of course it has me wondering if other companies will do the same, or if Stevens is just a giant heap of crap. Though I suppose there's no sense in worrying about it at this point.

    I plan to keep trying other places of course, looking here and there for schools that offer grants or loans, or companies that provide training and are willing to accept me.

    But I do have a question or two, that I feel are very important.

    My next 'Top choice' is Swift, but I'm wondering if anybody on this board lives anywhere near Dallas or San Antonio, Texas, and if so, are there any specific schools or companies you would recommend? I know I have brought this question up to some extent, but I suppose I'm hoping that, eventually, someone in the area will happen across one of my posts and have helpful information they would be willing to offer.

    As for Swift, though, if I end up going with them, does anyone know how much cash I'll have to come up with up front? Besides food money, that is. I already know how much money I can survive on, food wise, per week, so my main concerns are;

    1) Entry and/or Orientation fee (A few years ago it was $150. Has it gone up?)
    2) Cost of a Texas CDL - My current drivers license is still a Utah one.
    3) Any fee associated with the CDL learning permit, or if it's included in the price of the actual CDL.
    4) Price associated with Drug tests, or physicals?
    5) The cost, per month, for my Husband to ride with me as a passenger. (Not the most immediate concern, since by that time I'll be earning some money)
    6) Fees associated with transportation between the hotel and the school. When I went, there was no fee for that, but since the pet policy changed, I imagine there are other things that have as well.

    A huge thanks goes out to anyone who can offer information, or assistance with this dilemma. I want to get my foot in the door so very badly, but would rather not get my foot crushed in the process, in a manner of speaking.

    Yes, it is normal right now as a lot of companies either have a hiring freeze or are being very picky about who they hire. As for not being told the reason why, that is to be expected too.

    I just got denied by Prime and Werner today wasn't told why just that my application was denied. I guess I can give them the middle finger once I do get on with a company. I hold a grudge. I also contacted steven's but woman told me she would call me back by 4:30 today and if she didn't to call her back because someone was on her computer.Only other choices are Swift and Central Refrigerated which denied me a few months ago but this time I have a different recruiter but she ain't no nicer than the last one.

    by being refused by werner and prime, they did you a favor. with prime, you'd have the lease-purchase crap force fed from the very day you arrive on their turf. NEVER EVERRRRR, EVERRRRRRRRRR, EVERRRRRRRRRRRR LEASE A TRUCK FROM THE COMPANY YOU DRIVE FOR! you have absolutely no ownership rights to that tractor. as a company driver, they'll only own 50% of your soul. as a l/o, they'll own 100% and then some of your soul. at werner, you'd be making a craptastic $.26 per mile, get a beat up truck, and will be around a bunch of mobile hobos.

    These (sweat shop)companies are getting so many people calling,that its driving them crazy,I suppose.But anyplace where people have an attitude isnt any place I'd want to be.
    You keep tryin,nowadays its easier for a newbe to get a job than experienced driver with a bunch of jobs.

    I second that. Training is second to none, ON THE ROAD once you get your permit (takes usually four days, meals and lodging paid). Resist the siren call to go lease right out of training and go company to get the experience you need in the industry. Do be patient, though... for a company that so many dog all the time, Prime gets thousands of calls/emails every day.

    "Officially", the unemployment number nationally is nearly 10%. In all actuality, it is closer to 18% when you take into account people who's "benefits" have expired or who have given up looking for work. For a lot of people, driving a truck is a last-ditch effort to have a job when there are no jobs in their area....not a chosen profession. People who get into the truck as a "last resort" are looking for a job, not a career, and often times can't handle the peculiar stresses drivers face...whether it is long hours, extended time away from family & friends, mediocre pay...not everyone is cut out for life on the road.

    The recruiters aren't the ones doing the actual hiring. All they get paid to do is bring in a stack of applications, so that the HR department can go through and pick the ones they feel are most likely to be good employees. Sometimes they pick right....sometimes they don't. In this economy, however, the people in HR get to have their pick of the litter instead of having to accept whatever slim pickings cross their desk.

    NO employer in ANY industry has any obligation to tell you WHY you were not hired. Based on their hiring standards, you weren't the best they saw. Don't take it personally. It's not personal...just business. They are looking for the best, and right now they can afford to be picky. If they have a driver who otherwise matches your exact qualifications...except he has 2 years experience where you have none, he'll likely get the job before you do because they don't have to spend as much training the other applicant as they would with you. If neither of you have any experience, but he's got a history of holding onto the jobs he has had a little longer than you have, he'll get the job ahead of you because they expect him to hang around a little longer. If everything else is equal, but his recruiter gets along better with the people in HR than yours, he'll get the job ahead of you.





    According to the FMCSA website, there are nearly 700,000 active motor carriers. Why limit yourself to only 3? The recruiter isn't the one hiring you...so it really doesn't matter if you have a different recruiter or not. Have YOU done anything to make your application stand out from the stack? Or are you counting on the quality of the OTHER applications to be lower this time around?

    The economy is tight. Many carriers have equipment sitting because they just don't have the work available for all of their trucks, and they haven't sold them because the used truck market is flooded and they wouldn't get what they would like for them. They have already cut those drivers who used to drive the trucks which are now parked. Why do you expect them to hire YOU to drive one of those same trucks? They don't owe you anything. It is up to you to prove to them that you are better than everyone else in the stack and worth hiring. If you can't do that, and someone else can, you won't get the job. I don't care if it's a truck driving job or an office job. The people in HR are looking for the best, and right now competition is fierce for the few available positions.

    Holding a grudge is pretty childish. You didn't get the job. Boo hoo. Get over yourself. It's not personal...only business.
