Big money & free housing; what’s the catch?

Like many others, I’m contemplating going into the oilfield for around 2 to 3 years to take advantage of the free housing and earn lots of money to build up my nest egg. Currently I don’t have any major expenses other than rent (my car is paid off, no child support, etc.) and am single with no children. So a stint in the oilfield sounds like a great financial opportunity. But I have to wonder what the catch is? If these companies are willing to offer free housing yet pay so great, why are they so desperate for drivers?

I understand that I will naturally put in a lot of hours (I read the average can be 12-14 hrs for 6 days a week). I also realize that I’d basically have no social or family life. OTR drivers get to go to their home periodically, but the provided housing basically IS my home. But again, this wouldn’t be an issue for me. I also know that there can be slowdowns in the oilfield, and workers may only work 25-30 hrs in a week, so when it’s booming, you really want to grind and make all you can. Lastly, I know that job security is not a guarantee. I’ve read about some who thought they’d get to retire after 10 years of oilfield work and buy a big mansion, but after their 3rd or 4th year were all of a sudden let go. So it’s best to have an exit strategy which I have in my case.

So do you think I’m a good candidate for a 2-3 year stint in the oilfield? What warnings would you give to persuade or dissuade me? I have a Class A with tanker endorsement and 2 years in a tractor-trailer and another 3 in a class B tandem, all of which had a 10-speed manual. I don’t know how high the demand is currently, so it’s like I’m quitting my job tomorrow to go move north, but if (and hopefully when) the demand is high, I may pull the trigger and take the leap of faith.

I failed to mention I’m considering North Dakota, as it seems to be the friendliest for newbie oilfield drivers and pays a bit more, but the state has more terrible winters. I think I’d like the northern WV/PA area if I could find a home cheap enough.

you did some research , so thats good .
with this situation , it has its good and bad .
When i was in Midland /Odessa , 2 drivers in a company paid 2 bed two bath apt . and the Company paid for everything - gas , electric , everything .
That said , you belong to them .
hard 10 hr restarts , work is 24 /7 and no sick time - pto time till at least 90 days in.
If they need you at a site , be ready to go
( 1 hr from the call in to driving out the gate )
Along with that , yoi could be sent anywhere the company needs you at a moments notice.
Some can do it for a long time , some for a short time ( my roomie had done it for 3 years and was still going strong when i left after a year ).
FYI from a old oilfield hand - stay long enough to make some money then leave on good terms.
    good luck

This reminds me of the north slope Alaskan jobs. I spent 18 years in Alaska and basically every corner of that state. If you’re willing to go up there and be a trucker, you can literally make $9000-$12,000 in a single month and then they’ll fly you home, and you have a month off. Then you repeat. And while you’re up there all your housing and even all your meals are completely covered and they bring in some top quality chefs and you get to eat like a king. Basically every penny you make, you can save. Imagine making $12,000 in a month and then getting a month off to go fly anywhere in the world you want. Yeah they even fly you out of there for free. But you gotta be willing to spend that month in total darkness and temperatures reaching 40 below zero to do it. If I was younger I’d jump on it. Too old for that game now.

You make one trip a day, take an empty side dump double down to Tok from North Pole, park it and take a loaded truck back to Fairbanks, Ft.Knox mine.
Drop the tail trailer in Fox and go up to the mine and dump the lead trailer,go back to Fox and get your empty tail trailer, there's a Fox crew that takes your pup trailer up and dumps it for you.
Hook up to your empty pup and go back to the terminal at North Pole,1 trip takes 12-14 hours.
There's also a seperate crew in Tok that takes the empties up to the loading area and gets them loaded, then drives them down the mountain to the yard where you swap trucks.
They stay at a camp in Tok.

Ran into a guy awhile back doing oilfield work. Told me he was making $30 a hour, which I didn’t think was that good. I can make that at home local.
He was making a lot of money, but it was just because of the ungodly hours he was working. He didn’t say but they might have been paying for housing. Still not worth it to me.
