Were you a 1099 or a w2 employee?
Even if you are a w2, he was required by law to have you fill out a w9 so don’t let him off the hook. I would call the irs and tell them that he is now demanding you fill one out and you do not have proof he has paid the taxes which will come back on you.

That roadside will show up on your PSP report showing his DOT number and looking at his Carrier safety record on the DOT's web will lead to a printable report of the inspection with his DOT and your CDL numbers for some proof of your employment.
Please contact the IRS and DO NOT send him the W-9 form; let him drown in his own stew.
Please look for a responsible carrier and don't look back!lual and Michelle33 Thank this. -
Thank you so much- that's exactly what I'm going to do- Thank you all for your input. I learned a valuable lesson from this lol
Numb, wis bang and kemosabi49 Thank this. -
Obviously you were working for a flake (and you knew it) but that's ancient history as they say. He can "verify" your employment verbally and in writing if he prefers. Hard now-a-days to hide our actions, right ? 21st century, high tech times we live in. Let the company you are applying to tell you what they want and need to qualify you for employment. And go from there. I've worked for co's that wanted written verification, or used a 3rd party co. to verify, or even gone with "we attempted to verify but got no response" and did indeed hire me !
Lonesome, Trucker61016 and Michelle33 Thank this. -
The only employment verification in question is the prospective employer verifying with your previois employer that you worked there. A letter you send in cannot serve that purpose.
If I were in your shoes, I’d call my former employer and explain to him that he’s legally required to respond to employment verification requests. As a sweetener I would mention that he’ll get his forms once he responds (truthfully) and you have your next job.
After you get your new job, send whomever you want after him if you think that makes you feel better.Michelle33 Thanks this. -
No! He is not legally required to respond; there is nothing that forces him to confirm or deny employment. The FMCSA requires the hiring carrier to do what they can to confirm employment claimed by the applicant, but if a hiring carrier can not confirm employment, they have to inform the FMCSA, and that's it.
The best one can do is to provide the hiring carrier all the information on their employment with a company, and if they need, provide a notarized declaration of their employment history but beyond that, nothing else can be done.lual, Lonesome, Accidental Trucker and 1 other person Thank this. -
I messaged him yesterday and told him that look- I did right by you- you need my tax forms and I need employment verification. If you verify my employment, I will certify mail you my tax paperwork (that way I have proof of sending and proof he received it). I truly don't want to go further than that- he has another driver who is as sweet as can be and I would hate to jeopardize his employment by me trying to stick it to his boss. I just want a clean break and to continue progressing in my career. So I truly hope my past employer doesn't do anything stupid- because I really don't want to play hard ball with him- I just want to move forward and have my experience-THAT I EARNED- counted towards my career.Accidental Trucker Thanks this.

Then stop messing around, walk away and listen to the advice you are given.
my god why do you drivers think that this is so important that it will stop you from getting another job.
you drivers think that other carriers and fleet owners don’t know the crap that is played on the drivers.Accidental Trucker and Lonesome Thank this. -
Wow- you sound like a joy filled fella- If I applied for a job that requires 1 yr of experience, but without the verification of my last employer, I would only have 8 months- that's a problem!
I think you may need to step away from the internet for a bit and take a nice relaxing stroll or something... you are a little too worked up here buddy.Lonwolv54 Thanks this. -
P.S.
P.S. I've already done exactly that-
