Pro's and Con's of Super Singles

Saw a super single blow on bulk trailer full of fly ash.

it was a mess, tore off all sorts of stuff.

 

I was not driving the truck when blowouts happened, the other driver was. Also can't comment on mpg, my "lost mpg" was a theoretical statement, since I bought it with super singles already. It did not have any sensors installed

 

A couple years ago I read a really in depth and informative study on super singles vs duals, but I can't find it again.

The one thing I do remember is, when you reach a speed of 72 or 73 mph the duals become more fuel efficient than the super singles.

 

Wow this thread is old but I have to say I don’t like them. Save fuel ? Probably do, and that is the only thing my company considered when making a decision.
Just had my first blowout with one and I can say losing ten percent of what’s holding you up with one blowout is not a good feeling in a loaded chem. tanker !!!
( Tractor has them and picked up a trailer that had them making me a ten wheeler, most of our trailers have eight wheels ).
Then I was incredibly lucky to have a shoulder wide enough for the whole rig right after the bridge it blew on. And it was just about to burst into flames when I stopped. Since you can’t limp anywhere like a regular truck I was thinking of all the places this could have happened- like the Bay bridge to Annapolis that I crossed a few hours earlier. Like they say on Shark Tank : “And for those reasons - I’m out.”

 

Interesting comments on both sides. is there a cost to switch from singles to duals? is it as simple as changing the studs on the disc axles all around? In my example, i am considering this purchcase of a rig with singles, and i decided i will stick with duals... what else needs to be done to ride with duals on T/A's?
