Another Fatal U-Turn In Florida

Legal or not it’s probably in the best interest of everyone around to know the size of your vehicle and use critical thinking skills to decide if it’s a good place to attempt a u turn in a semi truck or not. And I realize that’s asking a lot of the drivers we share the road with today.

Edit: Could’ve just turned left on Bradley, then left on Lake Lizzie, then left on Nova and been right where they needed to be. Or take a right on Nova since there’s a chance that’s why they were attempting a u turn there in the first place. I’ve been across 192 a ton and there’s no place I recall thinking I’d ever try and turn my truck around.

 

I don't know how you could look at that picture and not think the trucker made in error in judgement there. Maybe the 4 wheeler wasn't paying attention. From the trucker's viewpoint here. That turn was not built for trucks to attempt that maneuver. That's not enough space, and he made a bad decision. Now the intriguing part is whether he's going to be locked up and denied bail the same way the Florida Turnpike driver was.

 

Probably depends on if they think there’s a chance he will flee the country or not would be my guess.

 

Isn't it the responsiblity of the Publix driver to make sure he can make the move in safety?

And it was an illegal uturn - "The driver of any vehicle shall not turn the vehicle so as to proceed in the opposite direction upon any street unless such movement can be made in safety and without interfering with other traffic and unless such movement is not prohibited by posted traffic control signs".

Even if there hadn't been an accident, the truck still would have 'impeded traffic', making the u-turn prohibited. Most states have some kind of language like this in their regulations, which is why most people believe u-turns in trucks are illegal.

 

Of course it is. He had just about completed the turn when the car hit him. The question is how fast was the car going? Did the truck pull right in front of the car or was the car going 80 mph and not paying attention?
I agree that wasn’t a good place to turn around and I’m not sure why he was even there. There’s a Publix a mile or two back. Maybe he missed his turn. If that was the case he had a better option to turn around before this, similar to what @MACK E-6 posted.

 

I bet dollars to donuts that the truck is stuck in the sand off the pavement judging by the angle of it in the pic and that they hadn’t just about completed their turn. There isn’t much of a paved shoulder all the way along through there.

 

It looks like he’s on the pavement but it’s hard to tell for sure from the pic. If he was stuck then that would change my opinion.

 

I’m just guessing that by the angle of the truck and the passenger steer being off pavement that the drives are off pavement.
