WEL, DeBoer, HO Wolding were all small regional carriers with good reputations but reached a point where their growth killed the culture that built them. A lot of folks blame the second/third generation taking over, but it was more economics than anything else. When you only have 50 trucks, it's easy for owners/management to make choices out of enlightened self interest. Think pulling $50 bucks out of the till and buying lunch for the shop. Once you hit 150 trucks, you need more management and communication. The middle managers don't have the same authority to make decisions, and the authority they do have gets questioned from both directions. Making things more difficult, you can't grow slowly . It's like all the guys who try to add a second or third truck and fail - they can't focus on doing what made them successful in the first place but the other two trucks don't make enough to pay for additional back end support. Quick growth always leads to a drop in quality.

Tyson Foods has their own fleet of drivers. I drive for them and have had some misunderstandings with dispatch regarding HOS and some loads being “late.” Anytime it’s been tight to make a delivery I let dispatch know and they are sometimes understanding but never “come after” me regarding miles etc. usually that’s my own fault. Normally we work through the issues. I get on average over 2000 miles. Sometimes less but if you do good and be on time you’ll get the weekly. Past 3 paychecks as proof, 35 drop/shuttle pay.

Maybe it’s time to resurrect this “classic”..
Just when you think you’re having a bad day or week, you read this and then suddenly your day or week isn’t as bad….

A screenwriter should make it into a short comedy film.

I should probably go over there. My take home has been about half or less than what your stubs have, for about the same mileage.

I’m going to be the devil here and go back to the won’t take anything less than 60 cpm. I’ve been driving since 03 and I’m happy at the 57 I’m getting right now. Also split sleeper with reefer isn’t just possible it’s usually a necessity.

    Lonesome and Trucker61016 Thank this.
