Im pulling my hair out over this one. 94 international 9400, n14 cummins engine. last month or so ive been dealing with an oil leak somewhere from the front. its hitting the fan and blowing everywhere, but mainly on my lower crossmember. i clean it up, run a few days and theres the oil again. lower crossmember, under my ac compressor, side of steering fluid reservoir, my coolant hoses, under my water pump, belts, fan, FRONT side of pulleys, basically anywhere in the fans direction. 2 mechanics looked at it and neither can find it. when i turn it on to run it it doesnt drip anywhere, when i get loaded and run a few loads i can see the splashing starting when i park the truck and open the hood. replaced the oil cooler (thought it was leaking oil from my coolant hose) and oil pump (had its own small leak, but was old and changed it anyways). check the accessory drive area of the front cover and nothing, same with the crank pulley. nobody can see anything on the front cover leaking either. any ideas??

Are you certain it is oil that is leaking? Check the coolant to make sure there is not oil in there. Some harmonic balancers are oil filled. Other than that I would use fluorescent dye in the oil. Get the truck hot then shut off and check every 5--10 minutes. Run at high idle between checks.BoxCarKidd Thanks this.

I usually clean good and give a road test of 20-30 minutes. Yeah, if it's leaking that bad checking it after a few days running is useless.
You mention oil cooler and A/C Comp. Is the oil concentrated more to one side than thr other?
Firsr thoughts if it's bad up front is front main, accy drive seal, accy drive bushing, or cracked cover. Piston cooling nozzles are often overlooked.W923 Thanks this. -
it's definitely engine oil, its a very dark color..Just like the dipstick.
I'll look into again tomorrow, I have a few loads to run in the morning. I can warm it up and run it up and down the road and nothing. I ran 2 loads yesterday and noticed the leak again when I got home...seems to show itself under load is what I'm guessing.
no oil in coolant...when I replaced the oil cooler I replaced with a new filter and new coolant..although the old coolant was super clean. if it was anything with the accessory drive it should be leaking directly behind the pulley, but it does not. I do notice under my water pump looks wet...but I don't think an oil leak has anything to do with the water pump.
at first, I noticed the driver side inside framerail was getting wet the most, under the ac compressor/steering fluid reservoir area, now its slinging it all down the whole front cross member and to the passenger side framerail. -
put some dye and ran it for about 45 min...oil fill tube is the only spot I see leaking...which i already knew. Hopefully I can see something else after running loaded tomorrow...I'll post what I find!

Check the front of the front head and see if the leak is coming from one of the plugs. It may only leak when hot and working hard at max oil pressure. If it has Jakes it could be a loose external machine drill passage plug in the housing and only leaks when they are used.

On stuff like that I usually take the belts off. Stuff a rage in the blow by tube and run the engine at about 1250 RPM or so. Then watch for where it is coming from.
SmallPackage, QUALITYTRUCK and JB7 Thank this. -
getting close to that point..ran a dye 3 times and still dont see it when i use the dye light. kind of convinced that dye isnt even reaching the oil...

If you put UV dye in the engine oil fill and whatever it is that spraying around has no trace of UV dye in it then it is more than likely not engine oil that is leaking.
My guess is you're looking at a possible fuel leak. If not that, possibly transmission cooler leak (if you have a cooler up front) or a power steering system leak.JB7 Thanks this. -
How much dye did you use? Dye does not show leaks anywhere near as well with oil as it does in an a/c system. The darker and older the oil is the less effective the dye is. I've used 2 oz of Tracer dye in 5 qts of oil and the dye was still barely visible.
Tracer has different dyes for diesel engine oil and gasoline engine oil.
So I just looked at your pic in post #5 and see that the dye is clearly visible.
