Yes, tight. Many years ago a new ferry company started up from Dover to Ostende in Belgium. Only problem was it was not a through deck so we had to reverse down a concrete ramp and into the ship. Space was limited so the crew had to direct us down and they parked us so close that we had to pull our mirrors in. Not fun reversing blind into such a tight space.
There was only cabin and dinner space for 13 drivers so, after the 13th had arrived the other drivers had to walk round to the main ferry terminal and cross as passenger to Calais, then take a bus over the border to collect their trucks from Ostende. They wasted no time and always rushed for an early ferry as if they didn't get there in time Belgian dockers drove the trucks off and goodness only knows how many lumps were knocked off in the process.
There was another encouragement to being in the first 13 to arrive in Dover, the company was Italian, Schiaffino, but the food was French with table service by waiters and much better than the British typical self serve stuff. Also each driver had a cabin to himself which was well appointed with private shower and toilet. Luxury, and I always made sure I was well ahead of time to be one of the 13.
Sadly, a one ship company, family run, simply could not compete and after some time it was back to the old ones and although we no longer had to reverse blind and leave the cab through the window, we were all sad to see it go.![]()
