Recently started with a new company. I was put in an international. Long story short, I had issues with it and had a mechanic come out. We determined that the truck was only making 1.5 turns of the wheel from center to the right and 2.5 turns from center to the left. He said the passenger side gearbox was damaged. My company had me bring the truck to the local dealership. 1 week later I got the truck back and now it's only doing 1.5 turns from center in both directions.

Am I wrong in thinking the truck should make 2.5 turns from center in ether direction? I'm pretty sure my cascadia did 2.5 turns in ether direction.

If you don't feel it's safe to operate the vehicle, you don't have to. When I had less experience, the companies would put me in the trade trucks that would end up having all types of mechanical issues. Unfortunately, I had to do what I had to do for the experience and money. You're not wrong for feeling the way that you feel though.

Thanks for the reply. So I'm not a mechanic. From what I gathered I was relating turns of the wheel to the issue the truck was having with turning. But the real issue was regardless of turning the wheel the broken gear box wasn't responding meaning I wasn't turning as I should. I brought the truck back to the dealership and they took it in the shop and said it was all setup correctly.

I talked with my companies shop manager and he said if it's still not acting right then he wants me to bring it to the main terminals shop so they can look at it and I can test another truck.

That's the thing. I have decent experience. About 3 years. I've driven Volvo, cascadia, kw and international (once, when going to retrieve a truck). I've never experienced a truck doing this. I pick up a load tomorrow. If the truck is doing what it was doing then they're going to have to bobtail me to the main terminal because I'm not driving it with a trailer.

It is a pretty good company though. Benefits, good pay, home a few times a week, no inward facing cameras, governed at 75. Just, lol. This truck man. If it wasn't for all of that I'd of left as soon as they tried to put me in an international as apposed to a kw.

Turn the wheel as far to the right as possible. See how close the steer tires are to physically touching something. Then turn to the left and do the same thing. The stops on the axle should not allow the tire to come closer than about 2 inches to any frame, suspension or steering parts.

Also, the poppets inside the new gear may not be fully set yet. Most gears this is automatic when turning the wheel. The poppets in a new or reman gear will not allow full turn until you set them. To set them, find a parking lot big enough to do some figure "8" maneuvers. While slowly moving, make a turn all the way until you lose steering assist. If the poppets are not properly set you can actually pull the steering wheel a bit more to make tighter turns and also set the poppets valves at the same time. If you have access to a shop with a floor jack, you can also jack up the steer axle and turn the wheel each way until it hits the steering stops on the axle. This will also set your poppets. Most trucks it is normal to have between 2 and 2.5 turns of the steering wheel each way.

I brought it back to the dealership and they said it's turning correctly. I confused the turns of the steering wheel with the gearbox. In other words, I thought it was only turning 1.5 turns because of the gearbox being damaged. Apparently, it's how they're designed. So, tomorrow I pick up a load. If the truck gives me the same problems then I'm not going to pull a trailer with it. They'll have to have me bobtail to the main terminal or something. Bobtail it's not an issue since I'm not having to make steep turns without a trailer.

Always go with your gut.. if you feel it's unsafe shut it down.. have no problem being the Ahole.. at least you won't be going to prison on account of some dispatcher.. think of it in those terms and the path is clear.. nobody cares about you when it comes to trucking.. they just get a new driver LOL.. so you have to be that way..

Sheppard steering boxes are adjustable. When you get a reman, the stops aren't necessarily going to be in the right place. Had the same problem with unequal center to stop turns left/right. Not something for a company driver to do. Mechanics don't always know what's what.
