@wore out You interested, get the book. read. You got questions, make a load out of West Point and while there call his son, Mark Hazard.
Mark was doing the same thing and VP of 1st National Bank in WP as a day job, did the ag lending. My sister worked there before he started and was there when he retired. He is prolly running the old op since Gordon died in 2017 .

I will admit I know very little about bovine. While I would love to have a nice set of all black cows it’s not been feasible until lately. My ol crossbred bunch is hearty, easy keepers. Why that is about them ol crossbred rascals idk. When we was truckin hard that was my main focus.

The good black bull, checker board your way up to nice stout grade Polled Herford mama cows. 600+ black and white calves make the packer buyer set up and wave their cards.. Stood and seen it for 2 years working an auction ring at WP. Gordon was still raising cattle at 86 when he died.

I prefer a Hereford over Angus, because (IMO) they are a little more docile, and I think their feed conversion is as good/better than an Angus. Ran a 3way cross with my heifers for several years, Lowline Angus, Hereford, Semintal cross. He threw beautiful black baldys, and the heifers calved very easy. Sold like hotcakes too. I sold all those calves at birth pretty much, 2nd lactation, all the heifers get bred Holstein.

dont know what a decent straw goes for these days , but its arguably the cheapest route and can get good cross section of genetics. Good stuff out of Wisconsin Indiana Ohio and Iowa , in particular.

Have you ever considered embryo transplants?
It is an idea that has long intrigued me on a herd like yours that is wide variety of colors, genetics, and conformation, but is healthy, easy keepers, and good mamas.
1 or 2 mamas with good genetics, ai, flush, and implant in your herd mamas.

IMG_2158.jpeg It’s not a cow wagon, but it sure was a good looking rig and a beautiful morning this morning.
