I’m green to dump trucking. I’m really looking to get one just to be able to do a few side jobs here and there.. I have my eye on a single axel 98 ford l8000 with a plow on front. Even if it’s not this one I’m talking about the goal is to get a dump truck to possibly plow commercial in the winter and haul what I can in warmer months… is that too much stress on a dump truck or is it more of a that’s what it’s made for kinda thing. Any and all advice is welcomed

I’m not in the dump truck field, but Va DOT is looking for owner ops to sign up to help with snow removal. Not sure if this is common practice in other snow belt states, maybe worth looking into.

97 was the last year of the louisvilles
You really aren’t going to sub out a single axle, so you’ll need a trailer and a bobcat/excavator/backhoe,
plus your own big ### pile of dirt if you really want to make anything
don’t know what state you are in but I believe MA wants a 5 million dollar umbrella policy for plow trucks, and they won’t hire you without a wing, sander, and calcium tanks, plus a computer linked to the state office -
Hey thanks I will

I would try a township or county road department instead of the State. Likely make more headway, probably will need a sander too. Or, a large snow removal contractor, taking care of factories etc. My dad started doing that years ago, subbed under someone else for 6-8 years, and went out on our own. Hard on equipment, but good money if it snows.Opendeckin Thanks this.

Don’t be like the hustler with a dump truck scammers going on down here. Had left my gate open last month for a friend headed over and some dude comes driving in in an H2. In his heavy new york yankee accent proceeded to tell me he had just got done doing an asphalt driveway down the road from me and had a “half million dollar dump truck” still half loaded for me if I wanted it. Cash job. $300. $100 down for the “half million dollar dump truck” to show up and unload today and the other $200 for them to bring a skid steer and spread it out and grade tomorrow.

Lol, that mix would be a brick by tomorrow if they were gonna "grade" it tomorrow.

They hire contractors in NH too. The guy that plows the highway in front of my house is an independent contractor. Plows right around 6:00 in the morning like clockwork after a snow. Dumps about a ton of salt for every mile too.
Sons Hero Thanks this. -
A truck of that age that has a plow probably was used to spread salt and is very likely to have severe rust issues….it does look pretty clean in the pictures but look very hard underneath and where anything is bolted to the frame
As far as using it for dump truck work I suspect you will find the single axle to greatly limit your options but maybe in an urban setting there would be plenty for it…1999 C12 Thanks this.
