What is the average cost of adding a lift axle?

Correct. It’s easy enough and if the customer requests it then you do it to make them happy. Doesn’t matter if it’s needed or not.

 

In the early 80s I worked for a heavy duty towing outfit in the winter when construction was slow. One of the other guys towed a truck into the dealership - I can't remember what caused it to be disabled now - and did not cover the stacks. The turbo allegedly was damaged by towing the tractor backwards without having the stacks covered. The fellow I worked for had to pay for a new turbo. Since that day I have always covered the stack(s), right or wrong, stupid or valid.

 

Man, you will throw away more money in the years to come just trying new ways to build a better mousetrap. Tools are never a waste!

 

Was it a two stroke Detroit? That is the only engine that I think it might be feasible

With no intake valves I can see it it actually leaving a path for the air to travel. It’s a stretch, but if it would happen it would be on a two stroke

 

I honestly don't remember, I was thinking maybe a Big Cam. I really don't think towing had anything to do with it and that someone just wanted to offset their tow bill.

I guess to spin the turbo on an 8V92T air would have to flow through the blower too. Seems improbable, but there had to be a reason that covering stacks became standard practice at some point

 

It was explained to me that if the engine has a cylinder on valve overlap it's possible for air to flow through the engine and spin the turbo in the process.

As to whether or not that small volume of air moving through a single cylinder is enough to make a turbo start to spin I have no idea. Maybe I should try it one day.

 

if you have valve overlap with both valves open you don’t have a running engine to begin with.
