I ignored investing for way too long. But I’ve been at this company for 7 years. I put 10% of pay in the 401k and they match 6%. I also put $100 a week in a Roth IRA. Both accts are building nicely. I kick myself in the ### for taking so long to take this seriously…

Keep up the good fight, @JohnBoy … you’re an inspiration to a lot of us on here.

Well, back in the saddle the past week. Left the house a week ago Sunday with a rental car. As I was getting ready to leave, I got a phone call from my contractor asking if I would mind driving up to Humboldt to help out instead of Savannah. So I agreed and headed to Humboldt. Got as far as Troy Alabama and got a hotel room. Woke up Monday morning and finished the trip. The truck I was going into was still in the shop getting a new fuel pump so I spent Monday through Thursday in the hotel. The hotel, rental car and gas was all on the companies dime.

Because I was out for over 30 days, I had to take a drug test, so that was handled Tuesday. Thursday we picked up my truck at the dealer, a 2024 Cascadia with 140K on the clock. Clean and no damage. I moved in Thursday then was asked if I would mind doing equipment moves Friday and Saturday. I was paid for the whole week while sitting on my arse in the hotel room, so why not.

The equipment move turned out to be bobtailing to the Great Dane plant in Jonesboro Ark and bringing back one of the 350 new FedEx dry vans to Memphis. I did 4 round trips on Friday and 3 on Saturday. Then I was told to bobtail to Murfreesboro and spend the night. Woke up yesterday morning at 0500 and was dispatched with a Northern Kentucky run. 297 loaded miles up and 297 empty miles back. And let me tell you, my arse was dragging by the time I got back. Now I’m sitting in Murfreesboro waiting on a dispatch back to Savannah.

It feels great to be back, not one after effect of my surgery, and just feeling great. I want to retire, not because of the demands of the easiest job I’ve ever had in my short 44 years in trucking, but because it’s time to enjoy the coffee. I was home for exactly 3 months, and once I got over the hump of recovery, I enjoyed doing things around the house, helping my wife with real estate, and playing with our 2 high maintenance dogs. We are going to Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam for 3 weeks in February. At that time, it will be the end of this. Just got dispatched, time to make the donuts.

    JohnBoy,
You have been bitten by the retirement bug! It feels good doesn't it? I'm glad to hear that you have fully recovered and you surely have the best of jobs and employers any driver could ask for. Enjoy your final months at the job and Kudos to Mrs. JB for helping you along your journey.

I retired at 65. My last 2 years were with a Ground contractor. He too was a great boss. I signed up for the short term disability when I started. I had shoulder replacement surgery and drew 6 months of tax free income before my official retirement. Luckily I had 30 years of 401k and IRA contributions. Retirement is great if your health allows. I've had some hard blows but on the upswing now. Planning on November to be at my cabin and deer hunting the woods.

This might sound like a dumb question but what does it feel like to be old? Like do you feel the same as when you were in your 20s mentality but when you look in the mirror you see a completely different person because you change physically or is it both?
