    Hello fellas,

Shifter on my truck is very loose in all the gears but especially when is neutral. I went to Volvo dealer and they said to replace the bushing and i did replaced nothing changed still the same. I’m thinking that something in the shifter tower is worn. Anybody have experience with something like this.
    Thank you

What do you mean loose? Like you can’t tell what hole it is in because the stick has so much slop? It wont stay in gear? A little side to side movement of the stick while in gear even an inch or two ain’t uncommon with a high mileage trans. As long as it still shifts like you want it to and stays in gear it’s still working like it should to most folks. Try shifting a 16 or 20 speed spicer even when new. They were truly loose. You never could tell what gear it went into or came out of most of the time. Like rolling dice. Lol.

Yes it is very sloppy and i want to fix that if possible. Tranny has 1.2m on it lol.
I have couple of buddies and they all have Volvo’s and their stick shift is pretty steady nothing like mine. Both have around 1m miles on the trucks.
i can imagine shifting 16 or 20 with stick shift like that must be really fun lol

That is correct. I did replace it and it was really hard to get the metal piece from the bushing, likely i had air chisel and was able to take it out after 2 hours lol
I have to mention there is difference when the truck is in gear and between gears now it feels tight but the loose feeling in neutral is still there and i think the shifter tower something is siezed in there

The o ring on top of the stub shaft is probably gone. It'll let the tip of the stub shaft sit higher in the top plate, which makes it feel looser in all gears.

Eventually it'll pop out while in gear, and the stick will just flop around.

IMG_7999.jpeg Doesn’t the top plate have a or shifter rod have a piece of steel sticking downward that operates the top plate ? That piece wears over several years. I can’t explain it properly.

I just bough the shifter tower. I will change it most likely in the next couple of weeks, once i have some extra free time and will comeback to give an update. Thank you all for the responses
