Is ATS transportation a decent company to lease onto?

Hello all! To cut down in the nitty gritty, I have been wanting to go the way of OO for a while now. But I am stuck in how I want to proceed forward.
    My goals are as follows:
1: Become an Owner Operator eventually (yes I know leasing a truck is technically not that, but its a step in the right direction).
    2. Get into heavy haul/Oversize.
    3. Don't fumble it.

Now for some background, I went through training passed, got my cdl, and got my company truck last June (June 2024). I am a flatbed driver by trade, however I feel with my current company that I have reached the ceiling for what I can achieve and I wish to expand out further to gain more knowledge and experience. The small OD loads my company does have us haul (mainly 10ft 3in steel plate) does bring some satisfaction, but nothing at all like what I am wanting. I want to haul big, Tractors, Combines, Mining Equipment, 500,000+ lb pieces of machinery/equipment eventually. Right now it just feels like I am playing pretend at being a Truck Driver.

Now for what I am trying to achieve. Im no fool, sometimes not the brightest porcupine in the prairie, but in general not the worst. And I know that if I was to just go out and purchase my own truck I would fail, I may have some of the skills to throw straps/chains, but I currently posses none of the skills and no-how to start my own business, run a business, let alone try to go Oversize with essentially no experience. That to me sounds like a quick way to die.

This is where I found ATS lease program might just be my nack that I need. Things I know so far:
    1. It is a two year lease program, with a 1 year walk away clause in case I am not up for it, and or doing poorly. Which honestly sounds like it might save my behind if I get in over my head. After two years they offer to buyout the truck.
    2. In case you do fail but wish to remain with the company, they do offer immediate employment as a company driver, and switches you to a company truck. Which in my eyes, at least means there is some money coming in.
    3. I have read about this, but I do not know if its true. But from what I read, they pause the lease payments if the truck is in the shop and not making money. Which if true, sounds like a pretty good deal.
    4. This is just an extra bit of information I found out from talking to them. But if lets say you do buyout the truck after 2 years, and after 4 years you get to a point where you need a much heavier duty truck (3rd drive/lift axle on the tractor kind of truck), then they will offer you to lease one of those. And you can attempt to sell your current one, or just put it in storage. Im not sure if it is a pro or con, but it is just good to know.

This is where I come to you guys, I just wish to know your thoughts on this, if you think its a good idea, bad, just plain horrible, etc. I just wish to get my toes dipped in the water, just to know how it feels first before I decide if I like this pond. Also if we have any ATS lease drivers in here, I would love to hear your experiences and thoughts!

Looking forward to the all information that you guys can throw my way! Cheers!

I personally think guys that are interested in Lp are going to do it no matter how many people say it’s not a good idea.Them stopping a weekly payment if the truck is down is nice but you are also not making money. You are going to be married to that truck and for a lot of guys that where the burn out comes in to play so if you have a family in my opinion it’s not worth it even if you are able to make more than a company driver.ATS is imo no different then any of the other big trucking companies they all have minor differences but mainly the same there going to make money on the loads and the truck they are acting like they are selling you very few walk away with the truck if you stick it out in a couple years they will wave a shinny new truck at you and the whole process starts over.If you don’t have the money to buy a truck now and can’t finance it on your own the chances of you being able to in 2 years is very rare you simply aren’t going to make that much money or everybody would be doing it and this LP companies wouldn’t be constantly hiring

Look into what they charge. Many companies charge over 20% dispatch and give you bs excuse that their insurance is cheaper…. Well insurance doesn’t cost 3 grand a month difference if not more…. Also look into the equipment lease price… most likely ATS will stick you with $200 000 tractor trailer combo. And will make you pay $300 000 for it at the end of the lease if not more. I spoke to a guy doing lease purchase from a known flatbed company not long ago, and he got stuck with used truck, used trailer that cost him $296 000 at the end of the lease….in reality it was a $115 000 truck and $25 000 trailer and maybe $4000 worth of flatbed equipment.
So ask yourself how do you like it? With lube or dry.

Go to ATS as a company driver. Safest way to do it. If your record is clean (no felonies or DUI ever), get your passport and TWIC and go work in Canada and the Territories. Some of their company drivers make really good money. It’s a rugged environment, but it does pay well. Learn their system and their freight. Then decide.

LP isnt the way you want to become an O-O. The success/fail ratio is about as bad as it gets, and honestly you dont want to lease to the company that you are getting your truck from. That gives them ALL the control instead of just most of it.

And @panty snacher is correct. Most people that come here asking about it already seem to have their minds made up. Read some more posts on the subject first...
