I'm about to return to driving for a living and looking for a local job. Suburbs of Vancouver, BC if that matters. I'll be taking whatever I can get to get some current experience, but I was thinking of trying to get into crane trucks at some point. All I can really find is some crane schools that want like $25,000 for a week long course.
How does a guy get into cranes without paying 25k?
How do you get a crane certification?

Register with BC Crane Safety. Rroofing supply companies are always looking for operators and some will train you. You could enroll in a 3-year apprenticeship through SkilledTradesBC, which requires an employer to sponsor you.

Albertaflatbed Thanks this. -
Yup, what Taxihacker said. find an employer to train you or go the apprenitship route, those 1 week courses really only teach you enough to be dangerous.

From what I can see, most of the jobs need 40 ton stiff boom. Looks like you can get that without an apprenticeship. I'm not sure anyone would take me as it is. I just turned 50

Before you spend a bunch of money on a crane certification, reach out to the companies that have posted those job postings and see if they will hire you with a certification but no experience.

Exactly i get the feeling it’s like regular trucking everyone wants experience but not will hire you so you can get ittaxihacker66 Thanks this. -
I work with a crane company. Sign up with your local OE and get on with a crane company. Easy.

Age 50 is no big deal, I'm older than that. Employers like mature, level headed employees. Especially when you are using a crane, having a tendency to rush or take risks is not a good mix with suspended loads. Slow and steady is what crane work is, often it takes longer to plan the lift and get the rigging set up for the lift than the lift takes.
Get your basic rigging certification (usually a one or two day course).
Also put this site on your phone for reference - riggingresource.com - its an Alberta based site but is still usefull and BC may have a similar site. This site was developed by an Alberta company that had an industrial accident resulting in a death, part of the penalties levied was to develop a site dedicated to rigging and the associated Alberta legislation. This site is designed to look up what you need for rigging and how to inspect rigging to ensure it meets safety standards.Carpenter Scotty Thanks this.
