Here's what I have going on. My brother-in-law is wanting to drive trucks. He's been driving passenger vehicles for a good 30+ years. He let his license expire. I don't know why he let it expire but he moved states and now the state he has moved to made him pass all the tests again which he passed. Unfortunately motor carriers don't seem interested in taking him on with his lack of recent driving experience. Any suggestions or recommendations? Is he going to have to hold his regular driver's license for so long before a company will train him or are there ways around this? He's applied to two motor carriers so far but they don't seem interested in taking him on. One is TMC. The other I'm not sure about

How long was his drivers license expired?
Did he have a CDL for passenger vehicles? -
Three years since his license expired but he's been driving regular cars since his dad let him drive the farm truck on the farm as a kid 30 something years ago. He will need to go through a CDL training program but the companies he has talked to thus far are making it seem like the three year gap in driving is a problem. As far as I know he let it lapse because he was living in a city with abundant public transportation options but that's no longer the case since he's moved
Chinatown Thanks this. -

Most companies want at least 12 months experience since his new license was in effect.
Tell him to be patient and don't get any tickets.
He can still study between now and then and be better prepared for cdl school.
Some people use CDL Genie or another app. or both. He'll be able to ace all the tests for his CDL Permit.

Truck co's want potential new hires to be "normal". With their past. Hope I'm making sense. The truck co. will wonder why he had no license for 3 years. Was he in prison, out of the country, did he drive without a license ? ETC ETC Just sayin'
Numb Thanks this. -
Your bro-n-law will continue to get frostbite from all worthwhile "beginner" CDL fleets, at least in part....becuz:
- He does not have a CDL yet
- He has no recent CDL class "A" experience
- He has no recent non-CDL driving experience, either; thus, the incredibly anal-retentive
insurance companies working with these carriers have no recent track record with which to assess his risk to them
Now is a bad time to get into the CDL world, anyway....
