Smoker ignites blaze at gas station after lighting cigarette near fuel truck
This is the terrifying moment a smoker sitting outside a petrol station café in Maranhão, Brazil on November 3 absent-mindedly lit a cigarette, causing a roaring flame to erupt and light the nozzle of a fuel truck on fire.

Looks like the flame started at the table from fumes drifting from the fuel hose.

Aaaaaaand this is why no smokeing within X amount of distance signs are a thing and also why they are there for a reason.

That is because the fuel hauler only had one hose hooked up, which means that he was not recovering vapors back into his tanker. Either he was venting the vapors directly out of the tank or they were coming out of the vent stacks and settling down around the customers.
Also... I can't believe they put the drops so close to the seating area.Feedman, Flat Earth Trucker, broke down plumber and 5 others Thank this. -
If this isn’t a sign to quit smoking I don’t know what is!!

Nice going, yutz. I thought the driver was the one that lit the cig, IDK, you can't really blame the doofus, but couldn't they smell anything? Just shows to go ya', people light up cigarettes so routinely, they don't look around. Could have been MUCH worse, and if I was that driver, that guy who lit the cig would be shopping for dentures.
I read, a lit cigarette is not hot enough to ignite gas fumes, it takes a spark or a flame. As mentioned, we have vapor recovery that almost eliminated any risk, but I still see low brow cashiers sneaking out for a puff.
broke down plumber and The_vett Thank this. -
For the vapors to be on the ground like that I’m guessing the driver was the one venting them. If they had vent pipes I don’t think the vapors would settle like that.
It’s also a foreign country so who knows that the entire situation was. But here in the Midwest we still have a ton of places with vent pipes and I’ve never been concerned about vapors settling. If there’s not vent pipes a lot of people still don’t hook up a vapor hose when it’s good and windy.hotrod1653, Feedman, broke down plumber and 3 others Thank this. -
Off the Truck subject, but GM sent me a letter telling me my car is one of the bunch that has a manufactuering defect that can cause it to start a fire or even explode.
They have recalled it and said I have to wait for the fix because they don't have the part to fix it. They then told me they would send another letter when the parts are available and they can then fix the problem. This was a couple months back, and I have heard nothing from them.
The deal is having my car expolde and kill me, is just the worst problem. This car has so many things that are not right. They also are not confined to the fuel system. There are electrical problems, transmission problems, and many more,I can't trust the car, and thats unacceptable. sorry for the rant.
But yes , we all need to be careful at the fuel pumps!hotrod1653, Feedman, Flat Earth Trucker and 2 others Thank this. -
Only partially true. The U.S require big tobacco to use chemical laced self extinguishing paper. They burn a lot colder then elsewhere. Ive had overseas cigs before i stopped smoking them and they are a totally diffrent animal. And even then they are pretty inconsistant so you can have one that has almost no coating.
That said its still on fire and can cause an explosion especially when you puff if the fuel air mix is right.Feedman, The_vett, 201 and 1 other person Thank this. -
Years ago i can remember cell phones causing blazes at the pump , at least thats what was reported .
