In 1956/57, FL fruit paid $2.00 a 90 lb box from Haines City, FL to Minneapolis. On to Grand Forks and get seed potatoes back to Natchez, MS for $3.00 a 100 lb bag. 400 boxes up, 360 bags back. Gas was about ...$.36 a gallon.

You know it used smell like diesel fuel, old cow ####, with a splash of 90 weight around here. I really by God miss it.

Today it just smells like a regen……..hard to feel like a man when that’s what his place smells like

As long as you don’t start talking about automated tranny’s or hang up one of these posters…

Remember how good a truck stop used to smell? A mix between old spice and diesel and camels. Now it smells like armpits and urine. Just something about the way old trucks smell.

All those trait's meld into one description: Atmosphere...
The old places had a life, it's location, its build and layout, its offering as fuel, food, had or could get what else you might need.
It was a "good" stop and you used and appreciated. If it was not, you never stopped there again. The travel centers now have no "truckers soul." They subsist because a lot of present day truckers don't have any either...

(Back when I was selling $1.00 bills for $1.32 , there was a saying ):)
Why a person passed a door, to patronize another store..
The answer to this is I believe, in the service they receive.
