As far as the drivers go? Money talks. Secondarily, the equipment can lure some good drivers in, but if the money’s right it doesn’t matter what the truck looks like. Most companies are greedy and want cheap drivers. Plenty of ads on Craigslist for those types of jobs. Strong pay: you’ll have more applications than you know what to do with.

This question always cracks me up though. All employers know the answer and just don’t want to hear it. There is *always* a shortage of model employees willing to work for peanuts. That’s why all the H1B tech workers are flooding in from India.

Another question, cpm (actual miles) + percentage of gross. Is anyone doing this?

Literally the hardest part of any company is finding and keeping personal.

I can find customers all day long every day.

Equipment is easy to order or pick up on any street corner…..

Even if someone had a great pay package, if the equipment they want me to use is junk / crap the pay will never rise to the top.

The only way trucking works for me is because it’s my own company. I would never consider driving someone else’s equipment now. I’ve had my cdl since 1991.

Trucking turnover rate is 90% on a good day. Best idea I've come up with so far to beat that is 30% gross and let the drivers pick their own loads. That'd probably knock it down to 89%.

Let them spec their own trucks out too. And if you have a really good driver, buy him the truck of his choice. New or not.

I figure I would need to bake in engine rebuilds. So the idea of having a shop just to do that became part of the math. And if I'm rebuilding engines, why not have a body shop as well, to repaint the trucks and make them look cool. And probably a machine shop as well. That puts drivers in pimped out trucks and a way to keep trucks long term. The idea seems cool, but the reality is daunting.
And realistically the only way I can see to beat the turnover is offering equity to drivers, so that just adds another layer to it. Fun to think about and even punch out numbers on paper, chasing a solution.
