    Hi folks,

I'm looking for some help troubleshooting a Bendix system on a Kenworth T660. Driver complaint is traction control light comes on from time to time, also trailer ABS light. Intermittent behavior. I attached the status report from the diag yesterday. You can see roughly 100 hrs ago when I went in to find the wheel speed sensors complaining. I replaced all sensors on the drives and that seemed to make that problem go away. But now I seem to have a problem with the steering angle sensor? When I connected yesterday with ACom, I went to component tests, selected the Sensor tab, started the steer left turn test, it said "spin the wheel", I turned the steering wheel (both left and right), and the application just kept waiting for user input, and nothing happened. I cancelled the test, and got out of it. What I am doing wrong? Thanks for the help!

No direct experience, but a friend that is a mechanic in the Fed Ex shop has mentioned to me before that steer axle wheel speed sensor were causing constant issues like this.

If the steering angle is registering when turning make sure the steering angle is near zero while driving straight. Find the degree at driving straight ahead. Stop and set steering to that angle. Then calibrate steering sensor with A com.

Out of calibration is most common for steering angle faults.

Pull the column covers and make sure the wiring is not pulling too tight on the sensor when moving the tilt.

    Thank you!
    Some questions:
How do I find out if the steering angle is registering when turning? I don't understand what that means.
How do I set steering to straight ahead? As in, make sure steering wheel is straight when driving straight?
Stop and set steering to that angle - Again, I don't know what you mean.
Calibrate steering sensor - That's what I was trying to do, and apparently I didn't do it right. What did I do wrong?

Drive straight down level road and note the steering wheel position. Stop. Locate the calibrate steering angle test from Acom. Use legacy version. Once the calibration is completed the sensor will be calibrated to zero or straight ahead.

There is also a steering angle test in acom that measures the angle while turning left to right to check the sensor live.

If you have trouble finding the test let me know. If you’re using the Pro ACOm it’s all changed. Bendix tech help is also very helpful at 800AIRBRAKE

Enter Calibrate ESP sensors from the top menu. Select steering angle from the drop down sensors menu. The current angle is displayed and should be close to zero while driving straight ahead. Once straight select Start to calibrate to 0 degrees.

Go to Stability sensor graph tab to monitor sensor reading through the range of turns.

I went back to the rig today. I don't have a "calibrate esp" option anywhere. I have a "controller configuration" that has a calibrate option, but before I did that, I thought I should test first. Under "component tests" I selected "stability system" and then "steering angle". I started the steering angle test where it had me turn the wheels until they were pointed straight, and turn the wheel 90 degrees to right, and 90 degrees to left. Acom gave me numbers that it should show (+- 10deg). But my problem is, I can't tell exactly where "straight ahead" is, and it's a fairly sensitive thing, it seems. I could put it where I thought it was straight ahead 2 or 3 times, and I'm getting numbers that vary more than the +- 10, so I asked the driver the next time he's on a straight section of road, to look at the steering wheel and take a pic of how it looks, which might give me a better starting position. I also called Bendix, and the guy was willing to talk to me, but he didn't make a whole lot of sense. The software I have is real old (version 5.something), so he couldn't help me very much with that, and the steering calibration test on brake-school is all about the newest software, so that wasn't much help either. What the guy did tell me is that my trouble code means that the steering sensor and the yaw rate sensor (2 different sensors) are not agreeing with each other, so I'm going to have to watch those graphs while the guy drives. Furthermore, he told me the trailer ABS light coming on is a completely separate issue(I assumed it was related), and not only that, I cannot read what the trailer is complaining about from the diag connector in the cab, that I had to use a break out box connected directly to the ECU. Sheesh. I don't work much on trucks, I'm more involved in off-highway stuff, and this kinda has my head spinning.

Ok so I just read the thing that said the trailer has its own controller and uses blink codes like an OBD car from the '80s :). I'm thinking I can figure that out. Wierd thing though, I could swear that trailer only had one 7 pin connector like any other trailer and the air lines. There must be another plug to allow the trailer's controller to talk to the tractor. That's a mystery for now. Anyway, we're expecting a bunch of snow tonight so I doubt the guy's going to drive tomorrow, not until the plows have been out for awhile at least.

Hope you gave guy back all the labor charges for replacing the sensors on the drives.
