Are you able to work the spot market for a few years and then make relationships to do more of a direct to shipper type of model? Can the spot market be good enough to not work directly with shippers? Ive seen posts of $3.50+ a mile on DAT load board on dry van and reefer so i thought i would ask what y'all do. i was thinking maybe investing in different trailers so i can haul whatever looks good for variety but i'm not sure.

Spot Market goes up and down. Same with contract freight. Big Companies will sometimes work Spot Market and Broker out Contract freight, if they can make more money. Depends on the amount of freight and Trucks availability. You could do well with steady $3.50 pm loads. Usually the rates high going to certain areas because the rates coming out are half the amount or less. Some lanes are even both ways. All depends on the locations. Overall rates usually average out the same no matter what lanes you choose. If you get a good deal figured out, chances are others will also. Each Truck is just a small player in a huge game. It’s hard to beat the odds. It’s easy when it’s easy. Right now, it’s not easy. Rarely is. Short periods of prosperity, with overall sustainability is the best you can hope for. Competition keeps it that way. The system is set up that way. Despite all the problems, the system works. Plenty of people willing to participate.more_percentage and D.Tibbitt Thank this.

Thats the best way to use the spot market in my opinion is to find people you like to work with and build relationships with them...
