engine lasted longer than I figured it would

That's what you want to happen when they runaway so you can walk away from the headache of truck ownership with an insurance check. Unfortunately for me when mine did that it didn't burn to the ground lol
Bean Jr., Getsinyourblood and Numb Thank this. -
They don't quit until there's only about a half a gallon of oil circulating in there. They can take the abuse and keep going. It takes a while to burn 10+ gallons of oil lol. I bet 100$ this shop let that one burn down. I panicked when it happened to me and kind of lost it there because I've never had anything catastrophic before that. Now if it happened I'd just put it in high gear and pop the clutch to kill the engine. A buddy of mine blew a turbo about a month ago and that's what he did when his ran away he remembered what happened to mine and knew what to do when it happened to him.SmallPackage, Feedman and Numb Thank this.

Yup a turbo will do that

PACCAR or a Cummins engine?
Either way it’s nothing but a molten mass of metal now.Diesel Dave Thanks this. -
Best way to kill it in an emergency for sure but Cant do that with an auto tho. And if it has egr there could be another gallon of oil in the cac to feed it too.
-
Wasn’t as spectacular as an old 6-71 doing a runaway. If they black smoked that bad you'd see at least 6” flame out the stack and a pegged pyro.
mtoo and Diesel Dave Thank this. -
I'd just let an auto burn down it ain't nothing I'd actually have as my own anyways lol. Choke off the air is the only other way though.SmallPackage and Diesel Dave Thank this.
