Which dogs are good for trucking?
I'd love to bring a Labrador or Golden Retriever trucking with me but it seems like they'd be to cramped.

I have a Pomeranian that goes with me from time to time. very easy to deal with and great company. I don't know how anyone can bring a big dog with them and I have a VNL 860. Maybe big bunk I could see, not for me anyway. He love to ride in the truck and I enjoy his company when it makes sense.

I inherited a poodle mix. She did great after the initial shock of chance of life, people and home.... no shedding, but needs haircut every 5 to 6 weeks, since a lot of dirt and stuff can be dragged in thru cùrls.

I have a 60 pound mutt that has gone everywhere with me since 2016. When she was younger I stopped and let her out more to burn off some energy but now that she’s around 11 she’s pretty content to just chill out all day. Some weeks we’re home every night, some weeks we sleep in the truck 2 or 3 times. It’s a little cramped in this small bunk but we’re not living in it. She sleeps in front of the bed or between the seats when I’m sleeping on the bed. She sits in the seat once in a while but most of her days she stretches out on the bed.

Couch potato breeds do best, but any dog can do OK. It's best if you and the dog are house-trained and have a daily pattern with each other. I would not recommend getting a new dog or puppy and bringing the new dog into trucking. Trucks are loud, there are lots of shocking noises. I had a medium-sized dog that was maybe 2-3 years old (got through her chewing EVERYTHING PHASE). She was big enough to get in/out of truck with no help, but small enough she had several places to lounge/supervise. I would strongly advise against bringing any puppy no matter how cute. I would also advise the leash is connected to the pet and in your hand BEFORE the truck door is opened 100% of the time, not just every time you think it's a good idea. You do not want to lose your dog or have half of your dog run over. You don't just put on a seat-belt once you see a crash about to happen. You put on a seat-belt as a habit so you have it that one time it's necessary.Last edited: Dec 1, 2025

Some trucking companies that allow pets have breed and weight limitations. Under no circumstance be tempted to sneak your pet into a truck where the company doesn't allow it. That will get you fired instantly. It's often considered the same violation as picking up hitchhikers. Drivers with the company will see your pet and then ask the company why you are allowed to bring a pet but they are not. Busted

You're going to want a bigger dog. One that's big enough to reach the steering wheel and the pedals at the same time so they can earn their keep.
