Another thing ppl don't realize about NYC is that CDL-A jobs are almost entirely based out of Jersey. If you want something in the five boroughs (unless it's far out in the Bronx) it's mostly CDL-B or below with less pay than trucking jobs
Best *major* cities with good job market for CDL A local?

do yourself a favor and leave. It was the cool place to be 20 years ago with the hipster craze and all that. I lived there for a few years a decade ago but shortly after that it started going downhill and becoming even more insane and stupid than usual. Back in the 90’s and 2000’s it was probably awesome and still *almost* affordable for average people. It will always be an interesting place of course, just not one you want to live with long term. You’ll get sick of it just like anywhere else.Chinatown Thanks this.

Yeah like I described earlier, I only moved there for the sake of a long distance relationship, and felt like I could just scrape by splitting rent. Now that we're broken up I simply can't afford it. Rent is literally impossible unless you want to work yourself to the ground, and I have no intention of doing that. It's a cool city and unique in so many ways but no amount of fun is worth that headache.

Chicago and Philly feel most like "NYC-lite" to me -- similar feel but much cheaper.
Lonesome Thanks this. -
Just remember the more busy the city and the older the more likely you’re to get into some kind of fender bender or banging something up and it’s more risky for your CDL. Especially New York City. The stress level driving in places like that is off the chart as well. Personally, If I were trying to do exactly what you are, I would pick Las Vegas. No state tax fairly modern open wide roads lots of entertainment, easy to fly in and out if you travel.
Chinatown and XenonOxide Thank this. -
Boris or Vladamir will hook you up with a great 1099 job in Chicago. Even better if you want to lease from them.

Harrisburg Pa is a big LTL transfer area. A lot of those companies hire there. Pretty big Old Dominion yard is there.
XenonOxide Thanks this. -
The problem is that NYC is unique, and the cities that even come close to replicating it, like SF, Boston, Washington DC, are also quite expensive. It's simple supply and demand. So few places in this country offer any kind of urban life that those that do are in great demand, especially by people whose knowledge and skills allow them to command a very high salary. Those are the people you're competing with for housing, so expect to be outbid.
You might want to consider relocating to New Jersey, within an easy train ride from the city. The entire corridor from Secaucus down to Edison and beyond is packed with opportunities for local, home-daily jobs.XenonOxide and tscottme Thank this.
