Chicago is more of a workin’ man’s big city and a cool place in its own right. Illinois as a state though isn’t anything I’d mess with. WI is much better.
Best *major* cities with good job market for CDL A local?

Maybe Miami, FL since so many Yankees are moving there.

I liked New Jersey and also lived over there a few years after I got tired of NY (Brooklyn). I lived in Ironbound in Newark which is the safer Brazilian/Portuguese area. It was okay even though I ain’t Spanish or Portuguese. Then I moved over to the Linden/Cranford area because that’s where my driving job was. I rarely ever bothered going over to the NY side once I moved over to NJ. Too big of a hassle unless you live right up close in Hoboken or Jersey City. (Hoboken is bad ### and fun if you can afford it.) Jersey is also a super expensive place to live though as far as buying a house and paying property taxes. Nothing I was ever going to afford as a single dude making $75k a year so I moved on from the east coast and probably would never bother living there again.Jamie01 Thanks this.

Jersey is a good suggestion, I'll have to think about the pros and cons cuz nowadays housing ain't cheap there, even deep in Jersey.

I'm shocked at just how big the rent difference between Chicago and NYC is. Chicago is a fun and bustling city too! My only reservation about the CDL jobs there is I hear there's a lot of shady 1099 companies there, that gives me pause. I'm worried about not knowing the market well enough to navigate it

"fun and bustling city"??
I may live in one, but I've longed for the country life.Rugerfan Thanks this. -
Cleveland is a pretty decent spot. Lots of trucking companies here in the area. There's a couple small local P&D companies that hire at $32+/hour. I was able to find a $100k+ job at a greenhouse about 20 miles outside of the city that only has me sleeping in the truck about two nights per week. Rush hour traffic here is also very mild for a large city. Rent is also not bad. You can find a house to rent for under $1500.

It's not my business where someone chooses to live, but personally, I wouldn't live in a high tax city/state even if the rent was free. Those places also have high crime and horrible traffic problems.

Florida doesn't have state tax and that's where all the crazy people live.Chinatown Thanks this.

I agree with @Chinatown . There are 9 states where you pay no income tax and they often are less expensive places to live with more jobs. If there is no strong family or personal reason to live where it's expensive why not volunteer to work in one of the 9 income-tax free states. I'd probably strike Alaska and Florida from the list.
Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming
