You are not lying on this one. My little Bear went with me a lot and when his time came and it was way too early at 4 years 8 months.
Last trip Bear went with me he did a few things he never did before. Always set on my lap or on my side and surfed. Ha Ha But that last trip he sat in my lap as long as he could and then wore himself out but he knew it was gonna be his last trip I believe.
We got back and had him at the vet for a few days. Found out nothing more we could do because his kidneys finally gave out. Last few weeks he had I stayed home. Ended up walking him everywhere and when he could not walk I just carried him on our walks and let him down to mark his spots.
Then had to give him IV and also pain meds. When he didn't want me to carry him anymore we would just go out and set in the sun together. Then he let me know he was ready and I held him and gave him all the love and let him pass.

Last Walk he could still mark his spots but I cared him on our walk.
Your little pup sure had it made too I bet. Good looking little fella. Sorry for your loss man.![]()

He is still with me but I’m home working in the shop till it’s that time. I feel your pain on the loss on Bear cause I’m to that point with Doc. We walk mark our spots. I carry his big ### some times. I worry sometimes I’m making him suffer cause I’m not strong enough. I honestly think though at this point he still has the want to. Every day is another i didn’t have with him. Tomorrow I may need advice on if it’s time. I feel for you Brother it’s not an easy thingwulfman75, tscottme, FullMetalJacket and 4 others Thank this.

Glad he is still with you for a little longer. Just like you described on in the truck with Doc you will know when he is done.
Bear stopped eating and it wasn't long after that. Still ate a little bit here and there but was not interested at all like he was. Was always a foodie dog and that #### kidney disease made it hell on him because he could not eat the stuff he used to love.
Personality wise was when he let me know more than anything. He had one last Good day out of no where. Seems when some people or animals find piece at the end they have one high day left in them. That is only when they have been suffering for awhile and they finally give in. He in his own way said goodbye and was ready to pass. Can't even explain it. We had a connection that was unlike any other animal I have ever had.tscottme, FullMetalJacket, jcatel and 2 others Thank this. -
Having had a smaller lab (55lbs) for over 3 years you might want to consider a hypoallergenic breed so you don't have to deal with all the fur. I love retrievers and their personality, but apparently poodles have good temperaments as well. Won't have to spend an arm and a leg for a mix, just get a mini poodle.
The best dogs come from the Humane Society, so check around. They're always full of backyard bred pitbull mixes, but there will be a few good breeds mixed in.tscottme, Carpenter Scotty, Albertaflatbed and 2 others Thank this. -
Our Dachshund turned 20 yrs old last April. In August within 8 hours he went from walking to losing feeling in his hind legs to no longer knowing who we were. We took him in and had vet do the deal. Hardest thing I think I have ever had to do. I made a collage of pics from younger days to near the end and it's hanging over the TV. We have talked about getting another dog and I'm sure we will get one. But we just aren't ready yet. Something from a shelter for sure. Maybe in the spring.

Here's our 2 roadies, the lab was on the truck from 2015 till we had to put him down about 2 months ago for prostate cancer. The boxer we got her in 2018 at 9 weeks old and potty trained her on the truck, it was pretty easy for us as my wife and I ran team so when a pup wakes up it's time to potty so whomever was in the bunk let the other know so we could pull over and take her out. Not sure how well that would work for someone solo but I have to disagree with it being said don't get a pup. They both learned how to use the side steps as they jumped back into the truck so that we didn't have to lift them back in. My wife has since retired but I'm still running solo with my boxer and she loves it, heck the both of them have gotten to sniff all the lower 48 and Canada which I think is awesome. I do have a big bunk sleeper so it makes it easier to have a big breed but I've been in both, actually I teamed when I first started in a regular sleeper and if you can do it with another person don't really see a large dog being a problem either lol. I can say I'm spoiled with the big bunk and being an OO I'll never go back

Pets are hard because you see their whole life pass by, from spring chicken to old age and death. It’s not usually “tragic” in the same way that someone dying young is who didn’t get to live their whole life. It’s more of a melancholy “circle of life” thing, like watching summer turn into winter. Happens every year but still manages to bum you out a little.
