Driving a combination pickup truck and trailer interstate, 9000 pounds gross. Do I need to keep log books? Do I need to stop at scales? Thank you.

    Trucker61016 Thanks this.

9,000lbs gross? What are you doing driving around with an empty trailer?

Unless things have changed. Some states are 8500 pounds. Other states you probably won't have to worry about unless loaded.

    MercySakesAlive Thanks this.

As far as the Feds are concerned, no. A CMV is defined as greater than 10,000 lbs gross.

Combination of truck and trailer GVWR’s is most likely 10,001+ so I’d guess yes.

Scales…that is a state by state issue. Have to read the signage and decide if that applies to you or not. Most states probably not.

Are you this ‘for hire’ or hauling your own stuff? Like auction purchases for a farm, etc?

The truck has a DOT #. The truck is a heavy duty chevy pickup hauling a ~20 foot trailer. So not heavy tractor trailer equipment. The weight is prob under 10k lbs but I don't know. All the answers have been really helpful. Thank you everyone and if theres any more perspectives I'm all ears.
