I've been watching several youtube videos about getting started as a Freight Dispatcher and is thinking about buying a course to learn more. I do plan on working with a dispatching company first, so I can build my experience and training before I decide to start my own dispatching business. But I wanted to see if I can get some direction from some truckers who work with dispatchers or may have done dispatching themselves at some point.
From what I gathered, it seems that a Freight Dispatcher is someone who find loads for carriers, book the load and receive a commission from that load. I'm just having a hard time believing it's this simple and why everyone and their mama isn't doing this easy job?
I also know that it does require negotiating skills, where a dispatcher will reach out to a broker to try to negotiate better rates, which I believe I am good in this area.
Can anyone tell me what's the catch to this job as a whole?

You definitely want to broker hot shot loads, or maybe box truck. That’s where the big money is.

It's more important how many carriers / owner-operators use Freight Dispatchers than if using a freight dispatcher course will help you in trucking. It seems to be Freight Dispatcher is just a name-change to get around the requirments for a freight broker. The frieght rates are very very low right now. Having more people, broker and dispatcher and carrier/driver split the profit in the current environment is a recipe for bankruptcy. IMO, too many people think they will just be a random joe schmoe on the frieght boards and make money. From what I've heard 90% of the listed frieght on load boards are bogus. Their "bogosity" being 1 freight load described in 10+ different ways in 20 diferent locations, and for 20 different rates so that the broker can attract carriers who would avoid that load if the real details had been listed.
I'm old enough to remember when in the late 1980s TV was filled with dozens of "real estate investor courses". Why do you think Freight Dispatcher is a viable approach? Is it possible the people selling the course have more interest in pretending its common than the industry has in using freight dispatchers?Rideandrepair, TurkeyCreekJackJohnson and Peplow Thank this. -
Throw a couple mil into a bunch of trucks and trailers and you can dispatch them all you want

Most responses here are going to sound derogatory toward you. I'm going to try to answer you without coming across as disrespectful.
Nobody likes dispatchers. There's no other way to put it. The boss doesn't like you, sales doesnt like you, production doesnt like you and truckers certainly dont like you. Everybody in the office wants something different but can never achieve it so they blame you. You think you can get it picked up or delivered in less time than is possible.
There's an old saying that women cant measure because they've always been told "............" is 6".
They've been lied to.
Dispatchers have been lied to from everybody at the office. So its common place for them to lie to everyone they talk to as well. That they can get a load from Charlotte to L.A. in 10 hours. Then they expect transport to make it happen.
Its never ending.Feedman, Star Rider, Oxbow and 8 others Thank this. -
It’s easier if you just show him the exit. This thread isn’t going to end well from my time being on here. Especially when he said even “Mama” can do it.
Star Rider, ElmerFudpucker, Rideandrepair and 1 other person Thank this. -
Good lord…….. here we go again. Another one looking for “easy money”

Another "doesn't know his ### from a mudflap" wants to tell drivers how to get a load from point A to B. Do us all a favor and stay at at your current job.
Star Rider, Sons Hero, ElmerFudpucker and 7 others Thank this.
