.I want to lease out my truck to someone I know well who can do the hauling I was doing for now anyway. If I do this...does the lessee (who has his own DOT number etc and runs another truck as well for his business) use MY DOT number and name on the truck or put his own on? Is there a choice? He is based in another state with MUCH cheaper insurance and the truck will be parked in that state.
Anyone ever lease out their own truck?

Go get a lawyer to write up the contract and explain to you what your responsibilities and liabilities are.
Eddiec, azheavyduty and Pat Riot Thank this. -
Contact your state's trucking association

Just keep a spare key for the truck, if payments are late. Cheapest insurance you can have.

Is the truck titles in YOUR name ?
who is gonna get sued when they have an accident in Your truck ?
They are just gonna tear up
The truck or blow the
Engine and abandon your rig somewhere
no way I’d rent
My truck to
Someone else
They can BUY it if they want to -
I did something like this several years ago
It was going to be a long term thing and was some one that I was not worried about
I actually sold him the truck on paper and then he signed the title after it was transferred to him and gave it back to me. I kept it in my desk drawer.
not sure this is the best way but it kept us completely separate liability wise and generally gave me a way to get the truck back if something happened.
It had a happy ending in case anyone wonders
