TRW says every six months you need to remove your steering input shaft seal to clean it and repack with the special grease. The kit with a replacement seal, retaining ring, dust shield, and a little tube of grease is $60.
The removal process is to remove the bolt holding your steering shaft to the input shaft. Then pluck the dust shield off and remove the retaining ring with a couple very small screwdrivers or pocketknife. Then cap off the return line with a -6 or -8 , reattach shaft (you can leave bolt out) wrap shaft with rag and then bump the engine (dont start) .
I already just changed the filter and replaced about 3 quarts of fluid. There was just tiny bit of oil coming through. The filter was disgusting and the resivwar. Was gunked up. I think this was causing additional pressure and is why the seal was leaking but I have the input shaft seal kit.
At sunrise I’ll get an assortment of different sized caps and try popping the seal out by bumping the ignition. I guess I’ll try Napa and auto parts stores for the caps. -6 or -8 (3/8 or 1/2”)
TRW says every 6 months you should….

Rideandrepair and 4wayflashers Thank this. -
Must be some new style box because any of the ones I've put new seals in its sealing in oil and any grease in there is going to get washed away into the oil in the first couple minutes.
Rideandrepair, beastr123 and 4wayflashers Thank this. -
A thin layer of grease between the seal and input shaft surely would get washed away. The area between the seal and the dust shield is required to be cleaned and repacked every 6 months. According to TRW anyway.Rideandrepair Thanks this.

There is no special grease needed, use a moly base grease and just put some under the cover. No need to replace anything, all it is doing is keeping the upper seal soft and protected from crude.
Rideandrepair, 4wayflashers, wis bang and 1 other person Thank this.
