I've been using my phone to stream. I have a good plan, unlimited data, so far, so good. I am looking to add a Roku screen or tablet to my truck.
Should I bounce for a dedicated hotspot for the truck? Or tether off my phone?
Hotspot vs. tether to phone?

If I could tether the Wi-Fi off of this ELD tablet, I'd be a happy camper.

Look at your plan. Depending on your plan you may be limited on hotspot usage from your phone. I have unlimited data but only 30 gig hotspot usage. There are plans with unlimited hot spot but they cost more
tscottme and nextgentrucker Thank this. -
I agree with @keebler13579 . Look at your plan. Most plans have a hotspot data limit even if the phone data limit is unlimited. I've seen someone suggest that if you run a VPN then the carrier cannot tell if you are using the date on the phone or over the hotspot. I don't know if that's true. Other than that, I would try running your phone as a hotspot, stream the most demanding thing you anticipate watching/using (4k movie/gaming/etc) and if my phone got hot while doing that "worst-case scenario" and I had the money for a physical hotspot, I'd get the hotspot. If it doesn't get hot, skip the hotspot. I would anticipate that if you use the phone as a hotspot and also recharge it at the same time you will heat up your phone, especially if the phone screen is active for all of that.
BTW my phone carrier has a screaming deal over next 9 days for unlimited data, talk, text, unlimited hotspot for $16.30 per month if paid in a lump sum of $195 for 12 months. I've been using them for 4-6 months and love them. There are no additional fees, taxes. You pay the listed amount. The deal I described limits you to the ATT network. You would need to check the details for their Unlimited Premium and also remember to enter the discount code of HALFOFF

They can tell. 99% of phones use X amount of data and send X type of imput signals. If you really want to use your phone to steam id recomend a good unlimited plan then get a TV thats compatible to cast to. Same effect without any of the sketchy.
