Own software is always worth it the generic scanner can send you on a wild goose chase with incomplete codes ie no fmi

Was it easy to figure out how to change engine parameters?

There is a learning curve. It's easy to do things like clear codes and run regens. Beyond that usually takes a bit of research. I bought the software from a website. It was $300, is good for two years, and is the fully unlocked version. Detroit wanted $500 a year for a restricted version.
You will also need to buy an interface to connect your truck to your computer. NextIQ for example.BlueThunderr Thanks this. -
What website? And is it true that you have to pay Detroit Diesel $300 for parameter changes such as changing speed governor ?

EPCatalogs.com
Any shop will charge you to change parameters. Prices will vary.
FYI There are two speed governor parameters, one for with the cruise control on and one with it off. That one caught me by surprise when I set the cruise for the first time and the truck slowed down.BlueThunderr Thanks this. -
I was asking...If I had the Detroit diesel link software do I still have to pay Detroit diesel to make changes?
