Drivers can choose to work for hourly pay, % pay, CPM, or salary if they think it's important enough to find the companies paying that way.

@Chinatown I never cared for all the freebies and giveaways that were expected as a matter of routine in freight hauling. Somebody saying you need to log off duty while kicked back at a shipper or receiver. That's ridiculous. I've already had a rest break... No... the shipper and receiver need to get their **** together and turn trucks around quickly. Or there needs to be some compensation for wasting my time.

    No and neither does
Oh be still. If you enjoy giving any free time to your company, good for you. I'm sure that your company is grateful for your generosity.

True. Most people coming into trucking have no idea how poorly it does pay though or even a clue about the options you posted. When they find out the truth of what trucking entails they don't last long. It's why we import cheap foreigners. Because it's broken, has been for a long time, and just doesn't pay near what it should.

Maybe I'm the weird odd ball here, but I don't think trucking pays poorly. You get paid to drive. If you're on the dock, you're just waiting or sleeping. I feel fortunate to get detention pay for doing nothing for several hours. Doing nothing isn't productive at all, so I count my blessings when I get detention or layover. It ain't too many jobs that you can take home 1300 per week just by sitting on your behind for hours on end. Is it that trucking pays poorly or drivers mismanage their money? This is the easiest job I've ever had and it pays well to be so easy. Truckers want to be paid just for being away from home. It's unrealistic to think you're going to drive nonstop. I mean.....to operate a company is very expensive in this day and age, and profit margins ain't that large for companies. I'm not sure where all this extra money is going to come from. Also.....as much as drivers fuss about wanting more money, they never do their part to reduce expenses for the company in order to get a little more cheese on the whopper.

I didn’t realize you logged on duty any time you were in the dock with your own truck. Or was logging off duty not ridiculous back then because it benefitted you?

The schedule and being gone from home can be difficult for some, but the actual job isn’t difficult. I’m like you, the company jobs I’ve had I’ve felt I was compensated to my liking.

Decent companies want the driver to log sleeper berth while in the dock and still will pay hourly detention pay even though the driver is in the bunk snoring.
