Looks like they trying to snag that piece of driftwood to me.

 

I grew up nearish salt water, it looks to me like they are trying to become a statistic, those big tides this time of the year can tumble you right out

 

The weather service advises people to keep children and pets away from the surf zone. Keep off of jetties, rocks and logs near the surf zone. If you see someone swept into the sea, do not swim in after them. Call 911 and keep an eye on them until help arrives.
