What happens if they find a gun?

NY doesn't generally recognize ANY other state's credentials, IIRC. In NJ just possessing one hollow-point bullet without any weapon is a felony and can get you a year or more in prison. States also have very weird definitions of "loaded firearm" in which having only a magazine with unfired ammo installed qualifies as a loaded firearm even though no weapon is in your possession. I think TN had something like that despite being a generally very gun-friendly state.

Also, I believe IL's FOID card was found unconstitutional this last year and may not be valid anymore. I haven't kept up on recent lawsuits very well once I retired. Other states, FL is one, are pretty lenient about issuing a non-resident Concealed Carry Permit and that could be useful. I think 38 of the 50 states recognize each other's credentials. One trap is for those states that recognize a Constitutional Carry right, no permit required. Most states DO NOT have reciprocal rights for non-residents. So if one wants the best chance of being legal in the most places, get the actual concealed carry permit and don't just rely on permit-less carry.

Then if you shoot someone in a state that you were required to flee..what then?

There’s a lot of knowledge you need to know and stay out of legal trouble.

CA you can stand your ground, WA you have to flee.

Leave the gun home it’s not worth it.

I've looked into this topic extensively years ago. The only way to be legal every where is to never be armed or to be a retired cop with a badge and have the credentials recognized by the various states. I think it's called something like LEOSHO.

I will say I considered keeping a gun in the truck. I forget what decisions I did reach on the topic, I'm still pretty shook up after my boating accident. In 28 years across 48 states. I REALLY wanted to be armed only maybe 5 times in 3 million miles. ANY TRIP TO OAKLAND, CA and parked on the street near San Francisco, within 75 miles of Portland, OR and Seattle, WA. IMO, as long as one doesn't hang out inside the truck stop, outside the truck, doesn't look to buy items from freelance pharmaceutical representatives, gamble with strangers in a parking lot you are about 90% less likely to even think about wanting a firearm since open carry isn't a practical option.

There are YouTube videos showing the effectiveness of Burna devices. The effectiveness is something often debated. Also, NYC prohibits even the Burna device and mace. Burna can fire rubber "bullets" or pepper "bullets". Nobody will ignore getting hit by one of these "bullets" but they aren't especially effective. They are in the neighborhood of shooting someone with a small paintball gun. I have seen demos where some people shake off tasers, bear spray, and 9mm ammo depending on their chemical choices and mental state. There's just no quick and easy answers for all situations. It's easy to be equipped for years and never have any problem. It's also easy to be equipped and that turns something like a medical emergency or drunk hitting you on the interstate into job loss, time in jail, etc.

I'd say best to truck without it and then decide. IMO, people outside of the industry amplify the danger in trucking about 10 times more than is justified. I grew up with a divorced mom that was "paranoid" about security stuff and I'm not likely winning many fist fights unless a neighborhood Girl Scout gets too rowdy (ha ha). I did a few years hauling HazMat tanker and went to places where they inspect the truck, mostly outside but sometimes inside. If I had been armed it would not have been found. But every terrorist event cause some customers to increase security measures and you only know after the fact if being armed would have helped or made things much worse than making the other choice.

If you draw it, you better be ready to use it, including taking a life, especially in close quarters.

If you dont, I have a very good chance of taking it from you and then can use it against you.

Other options are better, especially the non-lethal one posted by Chinatown, if you have any doubts of being able to shoot/kill another human.

Oh I have no doubt but it has to be justified as a matter of self defense or defense of a third party.. Texas hits a bit different though..
Another thing to consider...even if you do have to defend yourself, your family or a third party, you're still going to have to go thru the legal system... So you better be on the RIGHT SIDE OF THE LAW... Try to avoid it if you can... Even flee if you have to.. but sometimes the occasion arises for some folks and they just have to do what they have to do...within the parameters of the law...

Looks interesting but you could probably buy a paintball gun and freeze the balls and get the same effect. I bought the boy a pellet gun for Christmas and it shoots almost 1200 FPS and I had to show my gun license to buy it. Anything over 500 FPS / 5.7 Joules: Classified as a regulated firearm, requiring a PAL and strict adherence to firearms laws (unloaded, locked case, out of sight during transport). I was shocked thinking it’s a pellet gun not a 12 gauge.

When I got my Georgia Weapons Carry License they gave me a list of states that recognize it. I don't go to the north east much , but that's were I'd hide it good and not claim having it. At the end of the day if I used it to save my or someone else's life l would lawyer up and be glad I'm still alive. It's better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. And you have to be able to use it if you need to, personally if I knew me or a family member was in a life or death predicament I feel I'd have no problem emptying a clip into someone.

They ain't gonna find it in the truck because I'm carrying it.

A gun hidden under the mattress is of little use. Though I do carry a rifle with me at times to get some shooting in when possible.
