After taking nearly two years off I was disappointed to discover recently that Samsara's ELD still fails to correctly pause the 14-hour clock when the long rest period consists of 10 or more hours. There is no ambiguity in the HOS rules; as a programming hobbyist, I have a pretty good idea how easy it would be for their IT department to fix this bug that's now over five years old. Why hasn't it been done? This is a really big deal because there are probably still lots of drivers who don't fully understand how the split sleeper berth rule works that are passively letting Samsara steal driving hours away from them.
Really? Samsara STILL hasn't fixed the 14-hour clock bug?

I used the 8/2 split all the time on samsara with my last company and never had a problem. There is an option in the settings to turn on split sleeper , and then another box you have to click on the log itself that says turn split sleeper on.. or something to that effect... If you dont do this it wont work.. also if you do a 10 hour break your log will reset regardless of what you did before. Because you have satisfied your 10 hour required break... Not really sure what you mean by that.

For real!!! It’s so stupid if you forget to go off duty and th truck sits for two days over the weekend, you log back in and it’s all messed up and shows your still on. So dumb.
Rideandrepair Thanks this. -
That’s actually not true for mine. Just stopping for ten hours will just put you in the red and require the office to fix it. Trust me, my dispatcher knows all about it.D.Tibbitt Thanks this.

Are you staying on duty ? Ive never once had that problem.. one time i forgot to switch to off duty when i parked for the weekend and a simple 20 second edit from on duty to off duty gave me the 34 hr reset i was intending to do.Albertaflatbed and OldeSkool Thank this.

Probably. I’m not very smart with electronics. I’ll have to try that next time it happens.Albertaflatbed and D.Tibbitt Thank this.

The Samsara program for logging the company has that I work for will let you edit On Duty & Off Duty time, just not Driving and Yard movement time.

Screw it. I would run how I'd run and let the ELD fault. If the ELD messes up, I don't care; I'll continue driving legally even if the ELD doesn't think it's legal.Accidental Trucker, OldeSkool and mathematrucker Thank this.

Samsara is requiring that drivers toggle some setting to get their app to not tell them they're in violation when they're not? That would be pretty ridiculous if they were.
If you have 7+ hours of contiguous sleeper berth time in a 10-hour rest break, then 3+ hours of contiguous off duty time during your work shift that follows, the 14-hour clock that started ticking when your work shift began gets paused for those 3+ hours. However, if your 10-hour break had no such contiguous sleeper berth time, your 14-hour clock keeps ticking during those 3+ hours. (That's the easiest example to use. The reverse one where the 3+ comes first and the 10-hour comes after is more complicated because the pausing of the 14 during the 3+ is retroactive, once the contiguous 7+ hours of sleeper berth time is logged.)Last edited: Jan 11, 2026
Reason for edit: Just added some hyphens. -
Yes that's the correct thing to do, and it's what I do. My post should have acknowledged this better. It was implied when I wrote that some drivers are passively letting Samsara cheat them out of driving time, but I should have gone further and implored them to ignore the Samsara as long as they themselves are confident that they haven't broken any HOS rule.
