How much do asphalt haulers in northern states typically gross per season?

I’ve been driving a dump truck for a paving company for 5 years now (2 years in a class b and 3 years in a tractor-trailer dump), in the south. I understand that while many jobs in the north pay more, they get laid off in winters. If I moved north about how much should I expect to gross (assuming that I don’t lay out all the time and show up everyday)? The pay can vary wildly; if I get the money load at the end of the day, I’ll get more hours versus if I’m in line at the plant and they call off for the day and clock out early. And some years are busier than others depending on if we have any big jobs or state roads to pave versus normal county roads (on big jobs we work 12+ hour days and weekends whereas we typically work around 10 hours Mon-Fri on normal jobs).

You’ve posted for months about going north, why don’t you just go? I’ve tried to steer you in some direction on your other posts, I can only comment on western PA, but the cost of living is relatively low, Washington PA to be exact, Valley Bulk is somewhere I’d look, excellent equipment, good pay, fair boss. Pack up and go, what do you have to lose?

As a driver you would get around 35 an HR with 20 to 30 years experience in paving.

I moved to New Hampshire from Arkansas. Cost of living is definitely more. Real estate is the biggest thing. Asphalt work up here they have probably 5 months a year there wouldn’t be much to do. You could always get your hazmat and deliver propane or something during winter. Most companies look for part time winter help. I heard driving dump truck here doing construction work typically starts around $35.

That’s what I’m contemplating doing; haul asphalt during summer and haul fuel or propane during winter, provided they’d hire me. I’ve got the X endorsements but no prior experience in hazmat hauling.

I've never lived up north but I reckon you could keep busy during the winter running a plow.

Most companies that sub trucks out also haul road salt during the winter, even though it pays next to nothing
