During your schooling you'll want to fill out as many applications as you can. The school should help you with that, letting you know to put and where. Pretty soon, if you qualify, you will get either a fax at the school or an email with a prehire. You call a number on the prehire and the hire process starts up once you finish school and get your CDL. Fill out AS MANY applications and get AS MANY prehires as you can, it never hurt to have options. But not filling anything out or getting prehires can hurt you or at least slow you down.
Prehires a great because if it takes 2 weeks to hire you and schedule your start time it's best that you get that ball rolling while in school instead of sitting at home making no money and just staring at shiny license.
Once you get hired on you will be Greyhounded to the closest terminal for orientation, normally takes 2-3 days, then you get hooked up with a trainer and drive with them for 4-8 weeks (depends on company) after that you get the keys to your very own truck and drive like normal.

Once I got my CDL from school I filled out 12 applications that first weekend. A few more during the next week. I really wanted to get into flatbed. TMC didn't accept my application and Werner isn't hiring flatbed drivers, so I accepted a job with a small van/reefer company based out of Sioux Falls, SD, about 3 hours from me. Close enough I dont need to ride the bus!

if the bus ride is too much for you, since its really hard to sleep in one,ask the company if they will reimburse you the cost of the bus ticket if you can afford to fly.some companies may do that. all they can do is say no.

I got all my background and such before i even thought about school.
Cause you never know there are errors, and i also went to a buddy of mine who has a nice bizz, and asked him what the chances of him hireing me.
He told me if i went to my local community college ,he would have one of his vets ride /drive with me for a couple months.
And if he and i thought i was ready they would give me a truck.
I have two more weeks before i start school(nervous) but at least a year from now i will feel comfortable driveing.
Also no sleepers on the trucks but some 12 hour days so its not going to be a rose garden
But with a wife and two kids it will be better this way,i hope? -
12 hour days?

If he is running day cabs he will most likely be running local or micro-regional.
Unless they get a hotel room every night.
