Accident

It seems like you screwed up. But no one was hurt, no other property was damaged, besides the truck wrecked and, I assume, because it was kept upright, the load was not destroyed?
I'm not trying to downplay the seriousness of an accident, but unless there was some form of recklessness or some type of history leading up to this, it does seem a bit harsh on the part of the company. I've seen drivers retain jobs after much more serious crashes that were preventable. Just saying.

 

A company doesn't have to have a reason to fire you, but wrecking a truck is on the list.

 

Empty trailers are the worst in slippery or windy conditions, which is something you seem to have failed to take into account.

Going with the flow of traffic in poor conditions also shows a lack of judgement.

 

Was it a small company? Insurance companies can raise the rates on every truck in the fleet if just one driver gets a ticket or has an accident Their theory is that you might drive any one of those trucks so they want a higher premium on all of them. Larger companies, and especially self-insured companies, have more discretion when it comes to giving second chances.

Not all companies stay friendly after an accident, especially when it is single vehicle and they can easily blame the driver. Instead of waiting to see what they throw at you, it helps a lot to have someone who knows how the case looks from the other side.
