I need some help here because I have never done this without asking my "husband", now ex, what I should claim.
There is just me and my son. Do I go single and one, or single, or what??? I know that what you claim determines how much they hold out, but that's all I know. I don't want to "contribute" too much because I can really use the money now, but I also don't want to have to pay come next year.
# of dependants????

Ideally, you should claim the number of W-4 exemptions that creates a ZERO tax liability. I.E. nothing owed and no refund. IRS rules state (unless it's changed) that the amount withheld shall be no more than 10% less than the tax owed to avoid fines and penalties.
Single longhaul truckers qualify for the meal deduction (80% of $52 a day) which dramatically reduces tax liability. They can usually claim 1 or 2 extra W-4 exemptions which can lower withholding rates significantly. Individual circumstances can vary, however. Add mortgage interest (if you own a home) and 1 or 2 dependents, you could end up with zero withholding.
Here's a link to a withholding calculator:

hope this helps.bigcove Thanks this. -
I know this is a little late but was an accountant for over 20 years and still do taxes for individuals on the side.
Head of household is the best choice for you. Except for married filing joint, it is the most beneficial filing status you can have.
And try to get the child tax and the earned income credit if you can.
Hope this helps -
She is not trying to do a tax return. She is trying to decide the number of dependents to claim for the withholding on the pay checks.
The child tax credit and the earned income credit are claimed on the tax return. You can receive the earned income tax credit through the payroll checks if properly submittted to the employer. Might check out taking the child tax credit as well to get to a zero refund.Last edited: May 18, 2010

Line E of form W-4 personal allowances worksheet does indeed mention a Head of Household Allowance.
As does the Deductions and Adjustments Worksheet for those that plan to file an itemized tax return.
So Mizhope's recommendation is valid.
