Chicago has top 2 truck bottlenecks in nation, study finds

Chicago has the worst truck-traffic congestion in the U.S., according to a new study issued Wednesday.
The Federal Highway Administration released a roster of 100 locations for the most severe trucking bottlenecks, and three of the 10 most congested corridors are in Chicago, including the top two.

No. 1 on the list is the junction between the Eisenhower Expressway (Interstate Highway 290) and the Kennedy and Dan Ryan Expressways (Interstate Highway 90/94) in downtown known as the Circle Interchange.
The average speed in this highway corridor is only 30 mph, and it dips down to an average of 23 mph during rush periods, according to the study, which the Federal Highway Administration conducted with the American Transportation Research Institute, a trucking industry group. The findings are based on 2009 data.
In the No. 2 spot nationally is the Kennedy Expressway junction with the Edens Expressway (Interstate Highway 94) on the North Side, where the average speed during rush periods is also 23 mph, increasing to an average of 39 mph during off-peak hours, despite a 55 mph speed limit.
The Dan Ryan Expressway where it meets up with the Bishop Ford Freeway ranked No. 9 in the study. Traffic speeds averaged 47 mph overall, 38 mph during peak travel periods and 50 mph during non-rush hours, the study found.
The results are certainly no surprise to drivers in the Chicago area. But the research is intended to educate trucking companies so they can better plan their delivery routes and schedules to avoid the worst of the traffic crunch or at least mitigate the problem, officials said.

The 1st, 2nd, and 9th worst intersections are on the same stretch of highway, and all in Crook County. I find this quite interesting...

We are in Chicago quitw often and though it's bad it's nowhere near as bad as good old Toronto. To is just a traffic nightmare. I hate going through there.
