The pump says by law to run ultra low fuel in 2007 and later (newer) trucks...why is that and what happens if you put just low sulfer in a 08???

I heard it screws up the turbo different type of exhaust gas. I accidently put 50 gallons in 08 truck thankfully nothing happened. If its a dpf truck it will burn like crazy for awhile and also depends how much you put in to.

Has nothing to do with the turbo.

Fuel with higher sulfur content had more particulate matter in the exhaust (soot). It USED to be in the 5000 ppm range. Low sulfur fuel dropped that down to 500 ppm. However, with the DPF, even 500 ppm fuel was producing too much particulate matter for the filters to handle. ULSD has only 15 ppm sulfur maximum. If you have 3/4 tank of ULSD and top it off with LSD, you likely won't have any problems (other than your DPF working a little overtime). However, if you are nearly out of fuel and put 150 gallons of LSD into your tanks, you can plug up the DPF to the point of needing to replace it.

LSD stopped being sold a few years ago. Many smaller truck stops (and even some of the big ones with some of their pumps), instead of draining and cleaning out their tanks to be ULSD certified ($$$), instead began just topping off their tanks with ULSD. The pumps were still labeled as LSD, even though with every shipment of fuel brought in, the LSD was diluted more and more with the ULSD that was being added. Once enough fuel had been run through the tank, it would test below the 15 ppm limit and they could then change the sticker on the pump to reflect that.

It has been long enough since retailers have been able to purchase LSD for highway use that even if the pump IS still marked "LSD/not for use in 2007 or newer engines", it probably won't cause any problems. Those stickers are getting fewer and farther between, and enough time has passed that even if it doesn't yet meet the 15 ppm maximum limit for ULSD, it'll be pretty darned close to it.

That explains an argument i had on cb a while back. I #####ed about people parking in the ULSD lanes at a flying J and going inside and doing whatever forever. Guy tells me, driver, its the same fuel at the other pumps. Problem is, my fuel card KNOWS if it has the ULSD sticker, and i cant buy it regardless. ####### didnt understand that, thought i was a #######. LOL. Go to a LSD marked pump at a flying J with a werner fuel card, it says "unauthorized fuel" or something like that...

The problem is that a lot of flying J's have the two closest pumps labeled as ULSD, and the rest claim to be LSD.

The two closest pumps are also the easiest place to park to go inside and shower, sadly. So i often have to wait ages to get fuel...

I hate flying J for that one.

You know what, i dont park at pumps. Unless its late at night or early in the morning when there is hardly any traffic, or at some weird point in the afternoon where im not blocking it up...and i atleast pull up or dont park at the first pump..

OK, now it explains why i haven't seen any MPG improvement after i fill up with LSD every time i get a chance.

LSD is 500 PPM and if you use it the sulphur will plug up your Particulate filter The sulphur does not burn it just coats and sticks to hot surfaces. The older hands here will remember when the high sulphur fuel was used and burnt valves were a popular problem. If you have a problem at a fuel stop ask for the number of the executives and you or get your company to call them and get the pumps properly tagged and the card reader reprogrammed. Just a thought!
