On the other side of the Company Training issue, many schools decide to become dedicated to one carrier. What this does is take the recruiting process and cost out of the hand of the school owner and makes it the carriers responsibility and expense. Many owners fall for this in an attempt to make them more profitable. Honestly, what it tells me as an instructor is the owner has gotten lazy and comfortable. This is a cop out that puts many decent schools out of business and the owners of these decent schools fall for it all the time! You would almost believe the reason the carrier demands the driving school become dedicated to them is to put them under!
Options are a good thing. What good is a company paid training program if the training is so bad, you will be stuck under a 13' 6" bridge with a 14' trailer the first month out? I mean, most of these schools play a tape about log books and that is all the training you get! Most schools teach you how to back up straight and that's about it!
There are way too many bad schools out there. Most schools are started by people who have no connection to the trucking industry at all. Most start them thinking they will get rich! If they do have a connection to the trucking industry, their motives are the same....money. They are going to hire the cheapest babysitter (instructor) they can get, use as little fuel as they can, do as little backing as they can get away with and let you test at the most lenient place they can. And every one of them will tell you they are the best in the business.
I know many of you old timers get tired of me saying this but your newbie training is up to who trains you. If you do get a good instructor/trainer he may be the one that the school owner hates the most. A good instructor is going to burn more fuel training you and while you are in town turning corners surrounded by crazy 4 wheelers, your classmates are going to driving out in the country listening to tall tales of wonder from their instructor and you will wish that you could be out there only having to burn 15 gallons of diesel a day and having to only do 10 minutes of driving time a day.
So make no mistake. Company schools are in it to make money. Private schools are in it to make money. Recruiters are in it to make money...The only person that DOES NOT GET REWARDED at these schools is the instructor. So most schools are filled with OTR rejects, the simi-retired and if they do get a decent instructor, he will quit because of no pay or benefits. There are some good ones out there, but they will not be obvious. Those schools that have a huge advertising budget are the ones that are making money. If it is that lucrative it is because of one of three things. 1. They keep their operating expenses low or 2. They charge a huge amount of money that will soon put the finance company they are using out of business causing their students to default on their loans. or 3. It is somehow using government funds (taxpayer money) to promote themselves. And the students will think they are getting something for nothing. But we all know sooner or later someone has to pay for it.
So I wish you luck. There so many traps and pitfalls out there, so many ways to become so indebted to a company program that there is no way out!
Big company training and big scams associated with them !!!

I say again, had I joined this forum and started to read about 2 or 3 moths ago I might have gone at this a different way.
I was enticed by P.A.M. to go to Ft. Worth, take C1 Truck Driver Training course and owe them for my training.
The main differences in me and many other students for one thing I'll be 50 in April. For another thing I'm going into this prepared to give my all to it. I KNOW how much I don't know at this juncture.
But I'm soaking up info on how to make miles. And I have every intention of having a trouble free year.
And if it takes a minimum of two years to go elsewhere than I have to give two years! -

WOW mind blowing stuff, Boil it all down and it comes to,, just like any big industry,, Go BIG or go home. If anyone thinks that these big truck companies are in competition with each other, Then you would be sadly mistaken. Every load for these companies is brokered thru the same broker house. That is why a lot of non Walmart trailers are at walmart, (for an example) If one company had the contract then why all different trailers at D>C. Example 2 got to a K-Mart D.C,,drop and hook but they had no mty trls for me company sent drivers there to get mtys as a result they were now loading Swift freight in JB trls. and when those were full then...well you get the picture.. It's all based on what the richest man of his time J P Getty. who said "I would rather have
1% of a hundred mens' money than 100% of my own. Or another one don't put all your eggs in one basket..So you see these "driver mills" will not go away..and will continue to put the "little" guys out of business..For what it's worth, listen to your CB next time at a truck stop or highway back up.. The young and older driver alike...Well you get where I'm going with this..Trucking used to be a profession,,now it's just a job..Unless the veteren drivers can help the younger driver..instead of bashing them all the time..Nothing and I mean Nothing will change. With all the changes in trucking the last thing we should be doing is fighting amongst ourselves, Because face it we are ALL WE HAVE.,,and we need to stick together. So if you would next time you see a driver having a problem try to help him out,,and maybe we can all make this a little more bearable for Everyone.Big Don, SprkPlug62, JustSonny and 1 other person Thank this. -
After searching and researching the many, many trucking companies in search of a driving position. Even I, a driver with only 3 yrs. (still considered a rookie) and that is true..but I digress. Would'nt it just be KICK###, if we could take the good from each of these companies and build ONE real good one..Just imagine a company that REALLY does what it says etc....But here in the real world it's about how much you are willing to put up with and for how long...I have found that trucking companies are a lot like a pair of pants...One pair does'nt fit everybody the same. So if you'll excuse me time to continue throwing names in a hat, and perhaps,,well need I say more?

not to get off topic, but i wish leasing was a easy path for those of us who would like to own thier own truck...i went down that path years ago with Arctic Express, needless to say, even back then(1994 i think) when fuel was real cheap compared to today..i barely broke even, not to mention IRS wanted to go over my yearly taxes..which i pad..over a course of time..seems to me leasing a truck is almost if not worse than leasing a car,yes you make money with the truck, but in the end..do you ever really own it??

i have the same ?only what i want to know is what company sponsered has the lowest amount of complaint and accusations of being a scam

Who are you to judge somebody else's faith and beliefs?
You got a right to think and believe whatever you want, and guess what? SO does EVERYBODY else!
Take it easy -
My advice would be to go to private truck driving school. Don't get hooked up with one of the big company's that you have to work for a year and get ** Avoid all of the company's that advertise in the truck stop mags. They are all the same just a different 800 number. Best bet is to go with a smaller company not real small like 4 trucks ,but smaller than the than the well known companies. They tend to be more linent and actually know your name not just your truck number.
