My son is starting football strength conditioning this summer. We are unsure what would be the best diet for him to keep up his strength and energy w/o making him puke while working out.
I didn't play football so I have no clue what to tell him. Surely someone on the board can help us out.

When I played they always told us to get lots of carbs because they were full of energy and you would burn them up on the field. Nights before games I always had pasta and bread cause they're packed with carbs.

That makes sense. But what to eat over the summer while They are still practicing and strength training?
are there any foods that help with the rest and recovery period his muscles will need?

    protein, protein, protein and carbs

As much protein as he can stand

I used to eat 5 grilled chicken breast a day and drink 2 protein shakes during conditioning cycles. If he has a decent coach and training staff they should have all this type of information for him. If not have him go see a personal trainer at a local gym to set him up with the right diet and workout regiment if he is serious about it.

I coached elite level swimming for 28 years before going into trucking. He needs to basically eat a balanced healthy diet. He will also need more calories than normal during training.

Any type of training program be it strength or endurance involves breaking down muscle so that it recovers stronger. The key word here is recovery. He needs to replace muscle glycogen levels within 30 minutes after working out. That can be accomplished with energy bars or gel packs that you can buy at GNC stores or a bagel with peanut butter on it and some chocolate milk will do the trick as well. That 30 minute window is important as the body does a better job getting it to the cellular level.

the alistair overheem diet should work wonders on your son. k-1 and strikeforce fighter, alistair consumes horse meat......or, well, that's what he claims, anyway.

Protein like what been mentioned but also fiber helps with muscle ache. Good snacks and fillers like Cliff bars are great they are all natural unlike allot of things and have a good balance of nutrients in them.

Be careful. This article recommends taking creatine monohydrate.
Working with pro athletes he has access to a very high quality sources. They are not all equal. Also the FDA does not regulate supplements. What the label says is in a product often is not accurate. You can fail a drug test for anabolic steroids by taking over the counter supplements. You do not want your teenage son going that route. Get it done with good basic nutrition.

1 of the coaches talked about chocolate milk as a way to lessen the pain caused by overexertion and help the body recover faster. I thought he was feeding me a line of b s.
