Check into insurance first. That will be your most major hurdle. You need both liability and cargo. If nobody will cover you then your done right there.
As far as running off the load boards, I am and do excellent. I average around $1.50 to $1.68 for ALL miles and do about 9,000 per month. I also have a few direct shippers and make about $50 more when hauling for them. They are no dummies. Some people think your going to get like twice the amount. NOT. They take just as long to pay as a broker too. Another shipper I have has the customer pay me on the spot when I deliver.

Received UCR in the mail the other day - assuming all states are charging the same price based on the name being Unified mine was $76.00 for 0-2 trucks and it went up from there. -

OK, I'am a new, but very surprised at meat heads mpg while dead heading. I know he's got a flat in tow but still is that mileage in the normal range and to be expected?
