It was friggin' jaywalking. HIS hands should never have been placed on HER to begin with. The OFFICER made the choice to escalate the confrontation from verbal to physical when he grabbed her. She did the same thing I would have done if I didn't feel the officer was justified in putting his hands on me...I would try to remove his hands from me, without making any attempt to harm him. The officer made another choice to escalate the confrontation from mild physical contact to all out assault. Once the officer throws that punch, its game on. I'm not going to bend over and grab my ankles, allowing some punk with a badge to kick my ### without fighting back...I'm going to defend myself.

And you'd probably be permanently dead.

And then you're going to get shot. :)

If the cop is laying in a pool of his own blood before backup arrives, and I peacefully surrender to the backup officers, I would HOPE they would strike me or "rough me up"...and that someone would catch it on camera. It would have the potential of being a "get out of jail free" card for kicking that other officer's ###, and they would be facing an IA investigation as well as eventual police brutality charges.

First of all, once you are in an all-out close quarters brawl with a cop, he's not going to remove his weapon from the holster (usually some sort of security holster) because once he does that, he cannot guarantee he will maintain possession of the weapon. Weapon retention is a lot easier if the gun is in the holster, rather than loose and in someone's hand. Not to mention, if he is carrying a Glock, an AD would be EXTREMELY likely while wrestling with a "subject", as ANYONE'S finger slipped through the trigger guard would set off a round...and there's no way to know that the barrel wouldn't be pointed in his direction when that happened. If you are tangled up with officer #1 when officer's 2, 3, and 4 arrive, they aren't going to risk shooting officer #1 to hit you. More likely than not, they'll hit you with pepper spray to subdue you and then take you into custody. They won't shoot you unless you either take officer #1's gun or produce a weapon of your own. The key is, once you are separated, you stop fighting. Once you back down, they cannot legally shoot...and they know it. It doesn't matter HOW PO'd they are at you or how much the blood is clouding their vision...they know that if the person they are in a knock-down-drag-out brawl steps back and surrenders, that's it. If they draw down and shoot at that point, it is murder and THEY will be the ones doing time. Video cameras are everywhere these days, and the likelihood that someone didn't aim one in the direction of a cop-involved brawl is pretty slim.

Ramblin, Your first duty as a citizen, is to immediately follow all lawful orders given by a duly sworn officer of the law.
Failure to otherwise is a crime.
Failure to do otherwise leads to what these two girls got, appropriate punishment's. Like it or not, these two girls got less than they should have. Their first mistake was to not listen to the officer, their second was to try to walk away, at that point they were then disobeying the law and subject to punishment.
Touching an officer is tantamount to assault, she lucky she didn't get shot.

The cops aren't the law. They don't get to make it up as they go. They aren't above the law, either. If anything, they should be held to a higher standard when it comes to obeying the law (much like we are when it comes to driving).

I am a free citizen. I refuse to subject myself to abuse from a power-tripping punk kid with a badge. Treat me with respect, and I will show respect. Raise your voice to me, I'm going to raise my voice back. Cuss at me, I'm going to cuss back. Get abusive, and I will defend myself. Get abusive with someone who is unable to provide their own defense, and I will come to their assistance.

If you don't like the reaction you get from me, rethink your approach. I give what I get.

I'm wondering why so few officers seem to know how to keep a hold of anyone. Do they not train them at all anymore? If either of those women had a weapon, he'd have been dead. They were all over him. He had no control of either of them at any point. Talk about sloppy. And this guy is a sergeant? They must hand out stripes like free candy.

There were several fatalities at this intersection involving pedestrians. It was so bad an overhead pedestrian crossing was put in. The officer was stationed there by request of the school out of concern for the welfare of their students.

When you put your hands on an officer trying to effect an arrest or issue a ticket you are taking an aggressive action. All they had to do was accept the ticket and if they felt it was not deserved go to court and fight it. Over a simple jaywlking ticket their disrespect for the way the law works has them quilty of assualt and battery.
