Apparently, Really hot brakes can do it also; i got really hot going down I-68 in west virgina. i didn't have any mtn experience back then and went down too fast.
Smoke was just billowing everywhere and BOOM, one of the tires let go. Someone had called the FD on me and about 1-2 mins after i pulled over they were there; i'm surprised how fast they responded. No fire though just lots of smoke. -
Here's another one. i know no-body uses 3 piece rims anymore, but look at the cool older school trucks----astro, road commander, 352 etc.

Back in the horse & buggy days we didn't have brakes on the steering axle for just that reason.
The remaining axles had larger brakes to make up for the loss in braking power. -
